I found out yesterday that I don't even need a referral. I called an orthopedic surgeon. I have an appointment for Tuesday morning. We switched insurance plans this year. I was not aware of the difference. You'd think I'd know this stuff since I work in a hospital. So I wasted a few weeks screwing around at with my old doctor's office. As it turns out, I already know this OS, since I helped him setup his office PC for signing off charts electronically. The best part about this doc is that he's a runner. His office looked much like mine, with shoes and running shorts tossed in one corner. :-) So I'm looking forward to finally getting a real diagnosis.
In the mean time, I'm riding my new exercise bike and lifting weights to keep my sanity. Another positive note is that I'm missing some god-awful running weather .

A kindred spirit is a good thing. My ortho doc runs, and after his line about "Let your comfort level be your guide" he read me the riot act about how if I thought I was going to just be a runner and "run through the pain" on this one I was way wrong. "If you do that I'll see you again in a couple of months and we'll have to cut you open and put a pin in it" or something like that -- a salutory dose of Fear!
Good luck Phil! Let us know what happens. -- Daniel ( [email hidden] )

But here you're killing me! Indoor exercise bike? Well, I can understand it if you don't have a good place to ride, and there is the heat outside in Georgia. My area has some good rides, but the traffic is really too busy on most roads, and most are very hilly. About 1/2 my bike rides I end up spinning around a naturally scenic lake (VERY lucky to live near it) that also sports fitness walkers, runners, bikers and roller bladers, with plenty of the female species. Biking is the perfect speed to take in all the natural sights.

I had my appointment today. The doc was great. He expressed genuine concern for me not being able to run. He asked what I thought the problem was and he actually listened to my answer. He moved my leg around a bit to see which movement made it hurt. What hurt was when he pushed on the inside of me knee and ankle. He didn't have to ask if it hurt. My cries were sufficient. After that he said, "We need to get you an MRI. Now!" So I got an mri this afternoon. Definitely met my decuctuble after that.
Hey Phil, that's terrific. Not that you're still in pain of course, but that you found a doc who gets it. Of the couple I've tried for running injuries, neither is worth a return visit.
Best of luck on your diagnosis, treatment, and getting healed up ASAP. I'd rather read about your running adventures here than your injuries.
P.S. Given the thread title, should we expect a film of your life story starring Daniel Day-Lewis any time soon?
Had my OS appointment this afternoon. Bottom line is it's a torn medial meniscus. I'm scheduled for arthroscopic surgery on August 27. I was hoping for sooner, but I'm happy to finally be on the road to recovery. ;-)

You had diagnosed it correctly and now have a proof. 🙂 Is that a partial tear or complete? Wish you a fast recovery.

Exact wording of Radiologist's report, "Irregular degenerative tear at the posterior horn of the medial meniscus."

Doc said I'd be running again.
How soon? Like, can they sew it back into place and get you back on your feet within a few days?
This is great news Phil; I know you'll keep us posted.

Good luck on a full recovery. You seem disciplined, detailed and smart based on your training reports so I'm surprised to see you suffer a major injury. I guess genetics and bad luck has more to do with it than I think. A friend who is a very talented runner has had both knees scoped over the past year and a half. She has the form of a gazelle as opposed to my Daffy Duck imitation, but my knees have never bothered me. Go figure.

Good luck with the surgery Phil.
I think that it's a relief to get a definitive prognosis, and know exactly where the problem is and what needs to be done.

Phil,
Good news that you've got a good diagnosis now, bad news that it'll take surgery, good news that you *will* be running again.
Good luck.

I had the surgery this morning for torn medial meniscus. Everything went well. Just feeling a little nauseous right now. Here are some pics. They refused to let me wear my Forerunner in the OR, so this is all I have. ;-)
A few nurses commented on my low pulse. They were a little concerned until the OS, who is also a runner, told them why it was so low. Made my day. :-) Now for some serious recovery.

Best of luck. Thanks for the peepshow - looks workable now.

Looks like an improvement. Good luck with your recovery. Have they given you any time frame and PT for rehab and return to running?

Wishing you the best of luck! I won't say "speedy" recovery -- just best recovery possible!
Pics looked not quite from same angle, but am I to understand that there was a broken bit of gristle that was... what? Causing pressure back on a nerve somewhere because it was tweaking the bearing surface at wrong angle? So once it's gone you're back to learning how to be balanced and graceful as you negotiate roots in trails? :-)
(Geez it's amazing these bodies work as well as they do as long as they do under any circumstances.)
