What the hell is heavy cream? I haven't bought it because I don't know what
it is or what to do with it. It doesn't sound like something I'd drink. Do
you put it in coffee, or ???

is very low in carbs.Quoted message said:

Heavy cream doesn't go well in coffee. It's typically used in
recipes for ice cream, custards, cream sauces, etc. It has the
highest fat content, higher than whipping cream. And it makes a
better, richer whipped cream than whipping cream, which has less fat
content, but is still whippable. -

What the hell is heavy cream? The different products have different milk fat percentages that run
from near 0 for skim milk to near 100 rendered ghee.In the US heavy cream and whipping cream are usually the same or
nearly the same product. It's the cream that floats to the top if
milk
is not homogenized so regular whole milk gets divided into cream
for the low carbers and skim for the low fatters or variations on the
theme. Half-n-half is the next step down had is homogenized at
the strength from its name - half heavy cream and half whole milk.In the UK there's single and double cream where both seem a bit
heavier than the US versions. There's a FAQ file for rec.food.cooking
that gives the percentages.Quoted message said:
I haven't bought it because I don't know what
it is or what to do with it. It doesn't sound like something I'd drink. It's an ingredient more than a beverage. Then again that's how I
view whole milk and the various color coded reduced fat types.Quoted message said:

I like my coffee black so I use it in coffee maybe 5-6 times per year.
Cream makes for a better gravy thickener than flour or corn
starch IMO. And it goes in all sorts of recipes. -

I had someone tell me a story about life on a farm. He bragged about
being strong enough to not only life full cans of milk, but also full
cans of heavy cream. That was much harder, he said. However, heavy cream floats on milk, and is therefore lighter than milk.
So, another BS artist was identified.

Second most common use for me is adding to protein powder shakes.
It's nice once in a while to add a bit to a diet orange soda (tastes
like a creamsicle) or to a diet root beer (tastes like a float). You can also whip it up to make whipped cream. Make it with a
sweetener so it's low-carb. Add cocoa, which loses you a bit of
volume, but results in a mousse-like dessert. It's low-carb, but *very* high in calories. Not something to eat
large amounts of when trying to lose weight. -

I do also (the heavy cream I buy is 36% fat), when I run out of
half'n'half...a little goes a long way doesn't it 🙂.--

Sherry
lowcarb.owly.netI use it sometimes in coffee too, if I run out of half n half. My
point was that for most people it doesn't go well in coffee. I've
never seen it served in a restaurant along with coffee. You usually
see half n half or perhaps light cream. -

We don't have half and half, so for me it is double cream or nothing🙂)

Same here --
I got half and half last week because our store was out. It's just
not the same -- it's like not putting anything in there at all. I
need to remind myself next time that black is better than half and
half if I have to make the choice. Our store runs out of cream on a
regular basis.--

they aren't ordering enough. Also, the price keeps going up almost
daily. Last week was 2.49 for the pint, then the next week it was
2.59, now today it's 2.69. At S-Mart food it's 3.25, and the
Land'O'Lakes is 4.20. I'm going to learn to drink it black...someday.
Also, the Crystal is listing 60 calories for a TBS, and the store
brands like Sunny Select, Western Family, are listing 50 calories for
the TBS. Crystal lists 1 carb, and the others list 0 carbs. Dunno why.

If you go to Costco they carry half gallons, the price varies between 5 and
7 dollars. It keeps very well, I think it may be ultrapasteurized.Cheri wrote:

We never buy it in large amounts. After several days it gets too thick to
pour.
