I wanna know where to get Sapim Race spokes for a fair price. DT and
Wheelsmith spokes have always struck me as a bit overpriced, and
Sapims have retailed for 30% less or so when I've seen them side by
side. I've ridden DT spoked and Sapim spoked wheels and both have been
perfectly appliance like in their durability, so I see no reason to
pay the DT "bump".

Should be able to find 14 or 15 straight for less than $0.40/per,
14/15 butted for around $0.65, and 14/17 for around $0.75 in packs of
20.

There's only a handful of wholesale distributors for them in the US.
The two I know of are KHS and UBS (United Bicycle Supply). All shops
can get accounts with both (KHS is territorial for their bikes but not
parts & accessories), and many better shops will already have an
account with UBS. The spokes are great and you can get all of them in
smaller quantities, like bags of 20.

Cool! The LBS has been so busy since they opened that I'll likely just
pass Carl's link to the fellow rider who's thinking of learning to
build. The bags of 20 are a reason I like Sapim. When it's 50 or 100,

sizes (different ones, too, which is odd since they are the same company

A thread-rolling machine won't do much good for someone wanting
double-butted spokes. How many shops still have these things, anyway?

They can be used for DB spokes. In my comment I meant that few shops
deal with spokes enough to warrant stocking them or getting the PW
machine. The shop in Kauai had one though, and would just custom cut
whatever you wanted. I'm sure it isn't something they really make
money on though, so it makes sense that most shops wouldn't bother
these days.

We have DT Comps and Revs, silver and black in most lengths and I'll
send onsies and 2sies...$.70 for silver 14/15, $.90 for Revs, $1 for
black 14/15 and $1.30 for black revs..all include 12mm silver brass
nipps...shipping via USPS generally $5.

Yeah! That's the site I've been trying to remember! He stocks not only
the wonderful classic Pletscher rack, but the 4 stay version--and even
a 2 stay front rack--all with spring clips, like proper racks all
oughtta have. Cheap, too.

Last couple of my spoke orders (one for a new wheel, one to correct
machine-built wheel shaped objects) went to Lickton's as well. Fair
price, in stock.

Not many. It's usually a very large shop or a place that does lots of
wheels... both fairly rare.

I've bought a few DT sets online from Icycles: http://www.icyclesusa.com/
.. They have a Phil cutter, so lengths appropriate for my oddball
recumbent wheels were easy to obtain. The lengths came out correct,
but my last order came with the wrong nipples. They exchanged them
when I sent them back, but I wish I'd found that out before I put the
spokes in the hub. Caveat emptor...
