I hate this time of the year. We're still having enough nice days that taking the mtb out seems at least technically feasible. Except that due to recent rain and flooding, my favorite trail is under water. My second favorite is theoretically rideable... But it's deer season. I know hunters aren't supposed to shoot at something they can't really see. But I'm not willing to bet my life that none of them won't. And a dozen trucks with gunracks in the trailhead lot of an 8 mile loop is more than enough to give me pause. I could drive 40 minutes to ride a three mile loop over and over. But I probably won't. So the 'bent will earn it's keep, I guess. Either that or I'll go with Plan B, which involves eating myself into a coma and sleeping until spring.

I guess I'm a victim of an uneducated career choice 20 years ago. Wish like hell I could join you are embark on a similar endevour. I expect 95 percent of my rides between now and April will be on the weekends. By the time I get out of work, its too damn dark, and the local gummint closes all the trails at sunset -- [censored]! My options are spin class or skipping out of work early, neither of which are totally sustainable.
JD, just keep the pics coming and us poor indentured souls will continue to live vicariously through the visions of Fuitan wonder (except yer boy Scottie I guess). Ride on my brother!

I've ridden the trail up in Denbeigh (Harwood Mills) after dark. Ok..not totally legal, but I've never had anyone stop me either. They're just looking to reduce their liability exposure.

I've talked to a few guys who have done that too, but I try to make sure I ride where I'm welcome even if the actual reasoning is suspect. No matter how you approach it though, its not like you could make it a routine after work ride like it is in the summer time. I gotta figure the ranger (or one of Newport News finest) is eventually going to catch on if he sees the same car parked in the lot 3-4 times week at closing time.
I may be forced to drop some coin on a road rig and join the spandex mafia for the lunchtime paceline around the base. I swore of road riding ten years ago, right after my first mountain bike ride. Isn't there some sort of support group for this kind of thing? Now I'm back in a climate where the weather cooperates in winter to some extent, but work hours are in the way. It blows sitting in a cube all day with nice weather, knowing its going to be pitch dark by the time I get home.
Waiting for spring.....or my next day off. I WILL ride on Thanksgiving day dammit!
