  1. Just glanced up and noticed a new OL24 on the shelf
in a local shop but for the life of me I haven't got a clue
where, or if, the pic on the cover is taken in the White
Peak. It shows a walker standing on a small outcrop of
Limestone pavement. Anyone else seen it and have a
    clue ?

I don't know where it is but this might help somebody recognise it:

If you go to the back you can almost read the copyright notice for the

It just gives the EMAP copyright. It doesn't actually say what
the image is like it used to.

We'll have to get out there exploring for the location. Then we can take our
own pictures and Photoshop ourselves onto the cover!

I wonder if it's up on the Roaches, which I am told is a limestone cliff
common with climbers. The Active Map (waterproof version) has a picture of
someone abseiling down a cliff, again only a credit to Emap Active for the
    shot.

Having looked closely at my OL1 Dark Peak (2004 A1 edition), I have to agree
that your picture might not even be in the White Peak, although the green
    fields beyond do suggest that.
My map shows the bridge at Three Shires Head, SK009685. It can only be found
on the White Peak OL24 map.

No. The Roaches are a lovely pink grit.

The Roaches are Gritstone as any climber will tell you and are in
Staffordshire which may have escaped the notice of those who like to
    talk about Derbyshire Grit. :-

I thought the picture looked rather like the top of Malham Cove which is
well outside the area of the map (but I am by no means sure).

89 miles as the crow flies,
considerably more as the walker drives.

Feel free to tell me that I'm spouting [censored], if that's what I'm doing,
but aren't there parts of Frogatt Edge/Millstone Edge that look a bit
like that, and the valley beyond could be the Derwent Valley?

The view's wrong for a start, Tom, and while there's precious
few areas of limestone pavement in the Peaks I'm not aware
of any that enjoy quite such a position as this. But then that's
why I'm curious about the pic. I have *never* seen that view
and I live here. I need to be out taking pics of places like
this if they're in the Peaks but I seriously doubt that this
image comes from anywhere 'round here. I'm with Roger.
I think it's the Yorkshire Dales.

If I recall correctly (and the name Millstone Edge tends to bear me out)
these are composed of gritstone. (I don't see them on the map either -
are they on the Dark Peak sheet?)

One hopes the cover photograph represents a location on the map. Given
that I'd guess somewhere around the head of Dovedale - but I've never
    walked on the Derbyshire Limestone.

My impression is that the current series of Explorer maps isn't making any
effort to use photos local to the maps on the covers. If I recall correctly
previous Explorer and OL series gave the location on the cover - these ones
    don't!

The 3 Snowdonia maps have very "generic" photos.

I have never climbed at either Froggatt or Millstone Edge but would
think they are both gritstone. Certainly if Millstone Edge is not
gritstone then someone should have been prosecuted under The Trades
Descriptions Act which, perhaps, should be the fate of the OS if the
cover photo turns out to be outwith the area of the map. :-)

An area I know well (I hope!) and it's not that either.

I've emailed the OS. If they respond I'll post it here.

They are. Millstone is relatively recently quarried and is (just) on OL1.
(The two maps meet at 'Surprise View' between Millstone and Lawrencefield
    quarries.)

Froggatt was already a small natural crag before the quarrying started,
which more or less doubled the height of the cliff. So some of the routes
start steep and sharply defined, and become much more rounded at the top.
(The two pitches of Valkyrie are the obvious example.)

The limestone starts just a little further south of Froggatt - you can see
the (gritstone) edges of the Froggatt/Curbar escarpment as you approach the
    limestone cliffs around Stoney Middleton.

I walk in the Peak District once or twice a week, and I don't recognise
it - I'd have to agree with the poster who suggested it was somewhere in
    the Yorkshire dales . . .
