New helmet

Some helmets come with two sets of pads -- thick and thin -- or just spares.

If it feels fine as is, stick 'em in a drawer. Otherwise, use them to fine
tune the fit.

Most helmets I've ever bought have come with a second set of pads.

I've had pretty good luck lately with making the pads last by soaking
the helmet for a couple of hours to clean the pads. They get soft again
for a couple of weeks, and don't stink - always a plus.

I put warm water in my car washing bucket, put some liquid hand washing
detergent on the pads, rub it around with my fingers, then stick the
helmet into the bucket, and weight it down with a couple of dinner
plates or whatever else is handy and weighs two or three pounds.

Still, the original pads and the replacements will wear out eventually.
Bell will send you more pads on request (look for a contact e-mail
address on the Web site). Often, though, even when you specify which
helmet you have, the pads are not a fit for that helmet.

You might very well have received an owner's manual with your helmet.
In that case, RTFM (read the fine manual) to learn what you have bought,
and how to use it!

I did. The Fine Manual was mute on the subject.

Don't Panic! I think they just throw the same poly bag in with every
helmet, containing the manual, stickers and pads

The little pads can be handy if your bumpy cranium touches the
styrofoam at a particular point.
