Never tried it with Grapefruit juice... That sounds good.
My favorite way to fix it is with Cranberry juice!
2 shots Tequila
1 shot Triple Sec or Grand Marnier
Juice from one whole lime or Lemon (Lime is better imo)
Place that in a 10 oz. glass, add ice as desired and top off with
Cranberry juice. Cranberry cocktail mix will work ok but purer is better.

Not for me, though I should not say without trying it. The thing is, sour
mix is just strong lemonade. But I can see how grapefruit might be more
convenient.

That recipe is as much a Margarita as I am a Hollywood heart-throb.
A Margarita is made from tequila, an orange-flavored liqeur, and lime or
(not so good) lemon juice.
Grapefruit juice, feh, ptooie.
If someone likes this concoction, fine, but do not call it what it is
not. It's like people calling any horrid mix a "martini" because it is
served in a martini glass.

Fresh lime juice, in other words, some squeezes of lime wedges, and
sour mix, not either-or. In bars they use Roses lime and sour mix, aka
"whisky sour mix," but fresh lime is much better. In any case, you need
lemon and lime flavors.

Don't get your anus in an uproar, Pete. You can call it whatever you
like. Besides, I just tossed that out there because I happened to be
drinking one and didn't know if that particular cocktail has a proper
name. After googling around, today, I discovered it does.

Henceforth, so Pete doesn't have cow, I will refer to my fave new
cocktail as a Ruby Rita.

Not a margarita.
The names I've found through google are:
Giraffe
Chihuahua
Santa Fe Salty Dog
and the search led to this rather disturbing tidbit:
http://retanet.unm.edu/LADB-articles/25795.html
"The proposal to allow flavoring to tequila products
marketed in the US would represent a significant change for
the industry, which has long resisted allowing the dilution of
even its lower-quality products. The industry had
unsuccessfully fought the marketing of products in the US such
as a tequila-beer mixture sold under the name of Tequiza and
a tequila-grapefruit mix sold in a can (see SourceMex, 1999-09-22)."
I'll repeat that.
"...a tequila-grapefruit mix sold in a can..."
On the other hand, I have some killer grapefruit that
someone at work got of the tree in her backyard.
And a cabinet full of tequila.
And a thirst.
Research report to follow.

During my college daze, a late friend who lived next door at the beach
used to make a big glass pitcher of Salty Dog (vodka & grapefruit
juice) and serve it with a huge bowl of pretzels as part of our weekly
"Bridge night." She and I would usually team up against a physicist -
who worked for Rand Corporation and swore he didn't drink alcohol -
and a graduate student in mathematics from UCLA. Despite the
competition, we'd invariably win. Could it have been the pretzels? b

AHA! I told him it was a Salty Dog with tequila.
Nanner nanner, nb.
I think the proportions below are better for morning sipping, rather
than afternoon quaffing.
http://www.recipezaar.com/134186
1 lime, quartered
kosher salt or margarita salt
1 1/2 ounces tequila (premium white or silver)
1 cup grapefruit juice (or more, and as per above)
1. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a tall glass, then dip rim in
saucer of salt.
2. Fill glass 1/3 full with ice, add tequila and a squeeze of lime
juice, then fill with grapefruit juice. Garnish with a wedge of lime.

Never denied it. Why do you think I had grapefruit juice on hand?
OTOH, your recipe adds lime juice and lacks an orange liquer, a major
difference. Also, I leave off the salt. I had no doubt there was a
drink out there like mine, already, but I was in rfc chat and didn't
have time to google for it. I like the name, Ruby Rita. Close enough
but not too.

This drink is a waste of a good grapefruit.
However, I was relating my disgust to one of my favorite
bartenders this afternoon, and she recommended trying it
with Bombay Sapphire Gin.
So I did, just now.
A-yummmy!
It's too bad I only have one of these grapefruits left
(until the grapefruit fairy comes around again next year)
and it was the runt of the litter...
