It is an example of what I've been trying to explain to you: a shortened
link that when followed does *not* go directly to the target page, but
instead takes the user to a *safe* page that shows them what the
original URL was/is, and only takes them to it if they decide from the
URL that it's safe (fuzzypuppies.com, not bigbustyblowjobs.com) and
click the "Proceed" button.

Until I did some checking, I didn't realize that TinyURL (which is what
I used for the short link that began this discussion) offered this "safe
waypoint" service. The only difference between the direct redirect and
the one that throws up the "safe page" waypoint is the presence or
absence of the subdomain "preview" in the TinyURL -- the rest of the
TinyURL link is the same.

For anyone else that might be interested in this feature of TinyURL, it
looks like you have to go to TinyURL.com and click to enable the preview
feature. That seems to drop a cookie, and from that point on when you
follow a TinyURL link you will be first taken to the page at Tiny that
shows you the original long URL and you can decide for yourself if you
trust the page -- if you do and wish to continue to it, click the
Proceed link.

Summary:

1. If the shortened link contains the subdomain "preview" before
"tinyurl.com, then the link WILL take you to the safety check page.
Example: http://preview.tinyurl.com/27gogp

2. If you have let TinyURL drop a cookie on your browser by clicking on
the Enable Previews link then *all* TinyURL links you click will show
you the safety check page. (You can enable previews by clicking the
Enable link on the safety check page that comes up if you click the link
(to a nonextent page at one of my web sites) in Summary part 1, above.

When I post unwieldy, broken, word-wrapped multi-line URLs that are
troublesome for some people's software, I'll use the "preview" style
links, so you can see where you're going and decide; if you'd like that
feature to be permanent for yourself, then click the enablement link and
let that cookie be sent.

I already knew that TinyURL has the preview feature. I stopped using
that other url shrinker with the preview feature for the same reason:
it creaps me out. As far as cookies, my browser is set to accept them
for the session only so I haven't been broadsided by an unexpected
preview link to date.

Sure. You don't fear links, and neither do I. But some do (and/or have
to consider that they're at work) -- all this is about a courtesy to
those folks. Historically, I've frequently (read: when I think about it
<g>😉 post both links -- the long, for information, and the short, for
ease of use.
