Something weird is that I prefer cop shows to pretty much anything
else on TV, in spite of the fact that I pretty much don't like cops.
Perhaps a holdover from when I was a 14 YO pot smoker, and to us, they
were "the pigs."

I can just see Little Oscar being led away to a police car in
manacles. At least the police wouldn't have to hold his head down as
they shoved him into the back seat of the squad car. Then again,
they'd probably have to remove his chef's hat first.

first). Nowdays most beat/traffic cops, with their computers on
the dashbord, run about 75% of the plates they're behind unless
their on the way to donuts or talking on their cell phones. It
takes all of 5 seconds.

mobile inquiry terminal. I could punch in plates while driving down the
road and get back the information within seconds, and if the plates were
expired or there were other problems with it they were flagged.....
literally.... a red flashing flag appeared. It also automatically showed
the owners driver licences information and if he/she had an expired or
suspended license there was another flag. Some of the inquiry return
fields were hyper linked for other information, like driver record,
conviction record, plate transactions etc.

It would not have been new if my old employer got it.:-) I had a mobile
terminal for at least 10 years earlier, but it was slow, poor area coverage
and I had to go to different modes for different inquires. With new system
was fast, reliable and had the hyper links and flags. I used to have to
call in for information that was not available online. Once I got that new
MDT I never had to use the radio for inquiries.

Damn, Dave! Where were you last week when people were running stop signs
and making fast (but illegal) turns in front of me at stop lights when I had
the right of way?!

One woman I saw had her neck craned around, looking at her back seat. She
wasn't on a cell phone AFAIK but maybe she was; those ear bud things (should
be illegal) make it difficult to tell. I do know she was talking to a child
(or two) in the back seat. She paused briefly at the stop sign but then
just came on through without even looking. Good thing I was noting her
behavior otherwise she'd have plowed right into my car.

That sort of thing was the inspiration for DAMM, Drunks Against Mad
Mothers. Some mother is driving down the road, and turns around to
scold her brats in the back seat, then runs off the road and hits an
innocent drunk who is walking down the sidewalk with his 40oz. in his
paper bag.

If she was also engaged on her cell phone, then all the worse.

PEOPLE WHO TALK ON THEIR CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING ARE AS BAD AS DRUNK
DRIVERS, at least drunk drivers who are not very far over the absurdly
low legal limits in most states (0.08%).

The whole institution is the epitome of hypocrisy. Any pretense of
public good was long ago abandoned in favor if raw greed. It's now
