Extra loud timer

When my grandmother had problems with her eyesight due to macular
degeneration, I discovered a wonderful vendor for products to help those
with eyesight and hearing problems. Mind, usual disclaimer here, I'm

Instead of a very loud timer, maybe look for one that gives a visual
stimulation instead, like a blinking light or that kind of thing. Good

Reasonable suggestion but the ideal thing for *me* would be a
timer, preferably digital and loud enough to be heard about
20-30 feet away from the kitchen. Possibly, something with an
extended ringing time, not just one ping or buzz, might get it
noticed. I have asked LSS about it but I don't expect an answer
for a few days.

So go to Target and get a digital timer. They beep for a minute or so if
you don't shut them off. And!! They can be picked up and carried with you
to the next room, or even outdoors!

I've got a hearing problem too and I can recommend the Salter digital
timer. It has a loud, insistent, alarm that's sounds very similar to a
smoke alarm and goes on and on and on until you silence it.

Previous mechanical timers not only crapped out after a couple of
years of regular use, they were nowhere near as accurate as this
digital timer and all the mechanical alarms shut off after a few
seconds. The Salter cost us around 30 New Zealand dollar, so that
would be around 23 or so USD. It's also small and light enough to fit
easily my shirt pocket and the digital numerals are quite large and
easy to see.

It's probably like the one stuck to my refrigerator (it has magnets on the
back but you could put it in your pocket). Mine was made by Barclay Geneve
and is about the size of a pager but I can't locate one like it online.

When time is up it beeps loudly for 60 seconds (to the point of annoying the

My aunt just takes hers with her into the living
room or wherever so she can hear it. I have one,
the wind up kind that has a cord on it so you can
hang it about your neck. Unless he's really deaf
he could probably hear it if he keeps it near
him.

Oh, I like the looks of that one and the price too! I used to be able
to find one at Mervyn's that was only $6, but I got it on sale at 1/2
price. It's not being carried by them anymore. I looked for a
digital count up/down timer a couple of months ago but what I saw was
bulky and closer to $20 (or over).
