Yeah, we enjoy watching it at our house too. Think they let the wrong one
go - trash girl shoulda left, or really he shoulda got rid of both. Could
have been a bit nicer to aaron(i think that's his name) when he called him
in the hospital to tell him he couldn't come back. You know, considering
his condition, shoulda let the doc tell him or something like that. But of
course, that wouldn't have our Chef!

As a chef, I enjoy the show. I prefer Top Chef in terms of watching
skill and creativity. Hell's Kitchen to me is a comedy, looking at all
these cooks with limited experience talk all sorts of trash. Culinary
schools seem to be turning out lots of these folk, who think because
they did well in a class where they had 6 hours to make 1 dish that
they rock. As I was told early in my career "The CIA can teach you to
make a chocolate Eiffle Tower, but not to work the line." Or, as my
dad said about medical school, you graduate with a $100,000 vocabulary
(but do not yet know how to handle a patient). But the prize isn't
bad, so I looked into it. The open casting call was on a Saturday...
the strong candidates are working, the people who are more in the way
get Saturday off.

As a side note, when the women have lost, they've gone ahead and
nominated the two black women, though in my opinion they weren't both
the bottom 2. Just something I've noticed that didn't sit well with me.

We are faithful watchers. We also watch "Kitchen Nightmares" on BBCAmerica.
Gordon Ramsey is just one of those people who says what he things, though he
does it bluntly. I hate to think that these people are who the cooking
schools are putting out there as "chefs". I realize it is completely a
reality show, mostly scripted, still love it.

I fear that the chick who took food out of the trash would have been gone
the hell with any other nominees. NASTY

I totally agree that trash girl should have gone. You just don't do that!

Interesting that she turned herself in for it though. I've found it
informative that several of the contestants have denigrated the short
order cook's experience because of what appears to be a snob/class
judgment when she seems to be one of the most competent of the lot.

BTW, I saw an ad for the American version of Kitchen Nightmares during
last night's show.

There's something going on within the women's team that isn't being
televised. There was obviously some kind of agreement that the women weren't
going to speak to Julia (the short order cook) on that first day, but the
dorm cameras didn't catch any discussions about that.

At this stage of the competition, the competitors are being used as line
cooks. A short-order cook can do that job just fine. She absolutely saved
the day when they had to cook breakfast this last week.

Her signature dish at the beginning was chicken penne, which Ramsay
criticized as being too peppery. I think it will be that kind of thing which
proves her undoing, not any lack of competence or willingness to work her
ass off. I expect that her lack of expertise in haute cuisine will haunt her
in the later stages, but in the meantime some of her more-experienced
comrades will have fallen because of their lack of basic cooking skills
(e.g., skinning a sole and removing its roe) or their lack of integrity
(e.g., scraping carbonized pastry off a burnt Beef Wellington and expecting
to serve it as if it hadn't been burnt). And I think that's how it SHOULD
be.

I think Melissa and Rock are the two most-qualified members in the
competition, and I'm rooting for Melissa (mainly because she's so cute).

The problem is these people, and a lot who don't get on a reality
show, think they are a "chef" when they graduate from culinary school.
Chef is essentially the french term for "chief". You don't graduate
with a journalism degree ready to be an editor, or from business
school and head a Fortune 500 company. The education can be valuable,
but you have to put in the time to really learn the day-to-day
workings. I keep feeling my culinary degree depreciating in value more
and more given the level and attitude of people coming out.

herself on the firing line. Having seen Ramsey take two out at a time
before, I really thought he was going to, and he probably should have.
I think it was her honesty that saved her -- and those big doe eyes
she was making because she was so scared.

I'm hooked on all the cooking reality shows. Sigh. Having multiple
DVRs in the house is wonderful.

I saw that last night. Yea!! I love that. But that show can make you never
want to eat out again when you see how horribly filthy those kitchens are
and what little care they seem to take in keeping food fresh.

Maybe she thought she would have a better chance of forgiveness if she outed
herself. When I worked in the kitchen of a private boarding school that
would have gotten any of us tossed out on our butts.

AMEN! We have lists of programs on each of our DVRs. It always seems if I
have 3 shows I want to watch they are all on the same night at the same
time.

That is true! At least the pasta would have been washed and re-boiled a
bit before eating. Not much to do to rancid seafood and that could kill

We just watched this episode last night and my comment to DH was
"that gal took something out of the garbage, but the other one was
trying to serve the garbage". How she couldn't smell bad crab is
beyond me. I'm not surprised she's off the show...
