  1. Basic Flavored Icing recipe (great for cup cakes!)

1-2 cups confectioner's sugar (mix to taste)
    1 cup lard (crisco)

    + Flavoring (discussed below)

Soften crisco, one way being blending it by itself. Once softened, add
sugar a bit at a time. Once you've got about 1 cup of the sugar blended
in, start taste testing it, so that it's mixed to taste. If it's somewhat
slimey, add more sugar. For most people, you'll probably be right around
    1.7 cups confectioner's.

Once you've got this base icing, you can mix in various flavors. The base
icing is virtually flavorless (tastes like sugar), so works very well to
    mix with different ingredients.

Lots of very tasty icings can be made this way. Following are some
ingredients that work very well mixed with this base icing:

    *Vanilla extract (standard cake icing)
*Bailey's irish cream (#1 hit thus far)
*Maraschino cherry juice (hard to mix, takes some patience, but tastes
    great!)
    *Ammaretto/almond extract
*Melted chocolate pieces (Very strong flavor, be carefull not to use too
    much)
*Coffee (brew a very strong batch of coffee, so only a few spoonfulls are
needed. Too light a batch and the icing becomes watery. Excellent on
    chocolate cake!)
*Peppermint schnapps/peppermint extract (one of my favorites! Shaved
chocolate mixes delightfully with this one, too)

A great way to experiment with this is to make a batch of cup cakes, not
ice them, make several bowls of different flavored icings, using the same
base icing, and have a cup cake buffet. The above flavoring suggestions
have been my most popular experiments thus far, but feel free to try your
    own!
