I've noticed on more than one occasion since all my favorite fruits have been coming
into season that everything seems better this year than it has in recent years.
Especially watermelon and nectarines, and cherries. Is it the weather? Cyclical? I
don't know, but I sure am enjoying it!
So far I've gotten about a half dozen total watermelons from Trader Joe's and 2 from
Von's. They were all good, and the one's from Trader Joe's were bordering on
outstanding. Last year and the year before, we were lucky to find any that weren't
mushy/gritty/grainy inside or just plain underripe and pale. The last one was
perfection in a watermelon, IMO. Ruby flesh, crisp, juicy, sweet. Delicious.
Nectarines and cherries have just recently hit the farmer's markets about town, and
wow, are they fabulous. I got white nectarines, yellow nectarines, both bing and
rainier cherries, pluots, apriums, blueberries and a few boysenberries at yesterday's
market in Hillcrest. Everything so far has been wonderful. This is, without a doubt,
my favorite time of year!
What have you been getting, produce-wise?
