Wheelbuilding courses

Sorry, can't help directly. I was hoping that once EBC opened up in Newcastle they might offer their
courses in Newcastle too (a bit nearer to Yorkshire than Edinburgh!) They do offer private tuition,
where they come to you, from 35 quid an hour. This is aimed at groups rather than just individuals,
maybe you could organise something through a club?

I have yet to find any cycle maintenance/repair/wheelbuilding classes in Yorkshire let alone West
Yorkshire.I have asked the local Wakefield College twice to perhaps put some courses on but no-one
was interested.

I know it's not Yorkshire, but I did a basic one day wheel building course in Cambridge last year
run as part of the adult education curriculum.

It was 35 notes[more than I buy my bikes for:-] and well worth the money. I enjoyed it. Six wheels
later and all seems to be well....

It was a class of six, I drove from Watford and two of the guys drove down from Lincoln. I remember
them commenting on the paucity of anything similar in their area. So it would seem that these things
are pretty thin on the ground. Minority interest maybe :-)

What on earth is that about? Do they really not know how suspicious that will seem to many people?

The .exe is a self-extracting zip file. It expands to a folder containing MS Word format documents.
The .exe and the documents all pass scanning with Norton Anti-Virus.

That is for a 3-day course though. The courses seem to be aimed at professional mechanics as much as
home builders. If they are as comprehensive as they seem that doesn't sound unreasonable to me. They
do have to make a living.

Of course. In addition if they teach more folk how to build wheels then less will go to them to get
wheels built.

ever might want to know, including step-by-step instructions.

I've built numerous wheels using Jobst Brandt's book, with very good results. Buying Mr Brandt's
book strikes me as a far, far better (and smaller) investment than the wheel building courses
mentioned in this thread.

FWIW, Mr Brandt is a regular poster on rec.bicycles.tech. He can be (and usually is) a bit of a
crank, but his advice is worth reading.

He certainly doesn't suffer fools gladly, a fool being defined as anyone who disagrees with him.
He's usually right, occasionally wrong (but would never admit it), and is always worth reading if
you enjoy masses of technical detail combined with stinging put-downs.
