  1. I have been eating poorly this past week and this morning decided to test my
blood glucose level. It was 106 fasting! That seemed high and I was about to
eat a buttered bagel so I check at 1 hr after eating the bagel. It was 161,
another 40 min later it was higher, at 163. why did it keep going up?

so - things were much better when I was eating better (duh) And I figure I
should see a doctor of some kind??

Do I see my primary care? With my insurance I can go to anyone, no
referrels, so is there a different kind of doctor i should go to? What do I
even say? The stuff I looked at online said that it's unhealthy to be over
200 and I really don't know much about this all.

Are these numbers horrific? btw, I don't need everyone to call me an idiot
    for eating lousy this week.

    thanks!!

    No! Panic raises BG!

Probably because you have a little gastric slowing; do you take an acid
blocker, by any chance? It could also be that your second phase insulin
response was slow to kick in.

Your fasting number is certainly about 20 points above perfect normal,
but easily remedied, in all probability, by lower carb eating and a
    small protein snack at bedtime.

If you want to, but eating low carb and moving your body is the best
    medicine anyone can offer you.

Read the sections here on how bg control deteriorates, and the levels at
which damage occurs: www.phlaunt.com/diabetes It's the site of a
former long time poster here. Those diagnostic numbers are way too
high, and no one gets diagnosed until considerable damage has occurred
    if they wait that long.

They're not horrific, they're a golden opportunity/incentive to stick to
what you know is a healthy eating plan, and not keep cookies and that
other [censored] that tempts you in the house. Same with ordering out; if you
don't let them bring bread, pasta, rice to the table, you won't miss it.

Now you know you have a problem and you know what to do. Doesn't take a
doctor to figure it out. Use the meter to keep you honest. DAILY.

  3. Those numbers are bad enough that you should see your doctor. Over 130 is
    not good.

You mean, like going on a support group and telling everyone what lousy
eating choices you make over and over again--and then saying you don't
want anyone to tell you that it's bad for you? (over and over again)

hmm - are most support groups full of people that are breezing along or
having trouble? if all you have to say is to confirm that I made some more
lousy choices than i don't need to hear it from you. I already know it and
it is not easy to ADMIT it on a group or in the mirror or anywhere else.

I'm so flattered that you have kept track of my ups and downs though

I gather you're disappointed by her difficulties sticking to a good
    eating plan?

I'm guessing that folks without such difficulties don't actually *need*
a support group. I think that as long as it takes, as many times as
she falls off the wagon, that's what some of us are here for.

If you're not, you might consider the wisdom of just kill filing her. It
would spare you the obvious irritation, and spare her your bilious
    condemnation.

Panic? Maybe, maybe not. Pay attention? Definitely.

As far as the 161 up to 163 goes, I wouldn't call that "going up" --
you can get that much of a difference in two tests at the same time
    from two different fingers.

It shouldn't be up there, though. Remember how lousy you felt after
you ate the bagel. I'm not talking about, "Oh [censored]! I've done it
again!" I'm talking about actual, physical symptoms. For me, the
longer I keep my carbs really low -- and to keep my BG in control I
need pretty much induction levels -- the worse the reaction is when I
throw my hands up and say, "Screw it!" and order a pizza.

Personally, I'm about ready to throw in the towel myself and to hell
with how lousy I feel. I gained 60 pounds in four months after I quit
smoking -- still maintaining LC, but apparently too many calories.
Now, since the first of the year, I've lost a whopping 20 pounds and
I'm [censored]. I'm sick of it -- I'll either give up LC all together and
just buy larger and larger sizes, or I'm going to start smoking again.
I've had it with this [censored].

Don't you do it Blue...the smoking. It's better to carry a little
extra weight IMO (no, I'm not a doctor) Twenty pounds is twenty
pounds, and look at it this way, keep up that weight loss, though you
think it's slow, and 6 months from now, you'll still be smoke free,
and with another 20 pounds gone, it'll be a total of 40 pounds gone,
    and so on.

I maintain LC too, and I have a tendency to overeat, so I am not
losing weight...but I'm not gaining back the original amount I lost,
so that's something...I also smoke, very little now, but still, I envy
your quit. Don't give it up. Hang in there.

Yup. My daughter is going for a GTT, and her doctor told her as long
as the number's don't go higher than 200, it's OK.

That was considered good control back before my dad died... and that
was over 2 decades ago. We know a LOT more now.

Every doctor doesn't keep up with every field - especially regular
family doctors and such - who both do most of the diagnosis and most
    of the treatment for diabetes.

The site Susan gave you shows the current recommendations of the
American Association of Endocrinologists as postprandials staying
    under 140 for diabetics.

Non-diabetics will stay even lower and some doctors believe that
keeping your bg to normal levels is even better.

Really, you should get a copy of Dr. Bernstein's book. I don't
entirely agree with his recommendations, but he does a really good job
of explaining diabetes, blood glucose, the various treatment options,
    diet, exercise, etc.

That's a touch high, but you might read about "dawn phenomenon" if you
haven't already. It's not uncommon for your liver to release extra
glucose early in the morning before you wake up, to give you an energy
boost to start the day, which can give you a bit of a high fasting
number before breakfast. A little research will tell you how to
combat that, if it's a problem. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it
as long as it comes back down after a good low-carb meal.

    Quoted message said:

When I ate fast-acting carbs like potato chips, my one-hour and
two-hour numbers would be something like 180/150. When I ate
slower-acting carbs, or carbs combined with plenty of fat like ice
cream, that would reverse and I might get something like 130/160. It
just depends on how quickly the carbs get into your blood stream (as
glucose) and how well your insulin response stages work. It doesn't
really matter which number is bigger; if either one is high, you need
to stop pushing it up there.

Horrific, no; serious, yes. They're high enough that you really need
to stop eating that stuff because it's hurting you, but you don't need
any sort of emergency treatment. Most doctors wouldn't think you had
a problem anyway, with those numbers, and if they did a test, it'd be
a fasting test, which wouldn't show anything useful. You know what
your problem is and what to do about it; just do it!
