The water doesn't protect you. Whether you need sunscreen depends on
the sensitivity of your skin and the length of time you will be in the
sun, and the time of day. If you are swimming in the early morning or
evening, I wouldn't worry about it.

The water doesn't protect you. Whether you need sunscreen depends on

sun, and the time of day. If you are swimming in the early morning or
evening, I wouldn't worry about it.
True....and a few to add. The water will protect you if you go deep
enough for long enough. If you're just standing in 5' of water, the
sun will reflect off the water and increase your likelihood of sunburn
on your face. Also depends on local conditions; some places with lots
of sunshine provide a 'UV' rating for the day.
The OP should also stand topless in front of a mirror and decide if
others should see what he sees.
Maybe wear a T shirt? ;>😉

I always wear a rashie when I swim. Bloody sun screen lasts about 2 seconds
before it washes off.

I've always had good luck with Coppertone Sport - it lasts a good
while.

When I swim laps, my back is underwater (I think),
except for my shoulders. That's why I asked.
Doesn't water absorb sun rays?

Only if you use the wrong kind of sunscreen. SolarMax, for example, is
an alcohol-based sunscreen that washes off with soap and water, but not
just with water.

rec.martialarts people know about swimming out of doors? I think he just

What is a rashie?
A rash guard. It is like a tight fitting nylon t shirt that you wear under a
wet suit. Google for it and you will find a million of them online.
