The 50 meter outdoor pool in Oslo opened early this year. May 7th. That's the earliest it has ever opened, according to a newspaper report. Thanks, Global Warming!
And this year, they even put in a few lane lines so the more lap and training oriented among us morgenbaders can swim unhimpeded by the shower cap barges and the parachute praying mantisses, and the blue rinse set. I'm just putting in a continuous 2k to start. And they allow us to use training fins as well, so I'm able to wear my Zoggs, which I do appreciate.
But my pace is suddenly much slower than years past. I'm 57, but I wasn't expecting such a precipitous drop. Coincidentally, I had a case of shingles a few months back while I was in Australia. Very painful, but I survived. Does anyone know if an after effect of shingles could be this reduced performance?

Since shingles is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus in the nerve, I would be surprised if impaired performance were not an after effect. Do you notice more impairment on the side where you were affected? I'm sorry to hear that you suffered this, it is supposed to be very, very painful.
I know what shower cap barges and blue rinse site, but what are parachute praying mantisses? Madelaine

It seems to be on both sides. I suppose the effect is reminiscent what a very mild case of multiple sclerosis might feel like, which, given that the virus returns in the nerves, makes sense.

Skinny guys in billowing board shorts. They swim breaststroke badly, and as I pass them, they always seem to be in the recovery phase of the stroke, which makes a skinny breaststroker look like a praying mantis about to strike.
