I'm not gonna buy that, chainrings are interchangeable between 9 and 10, do it all the time with ZERO problems. Shimano will tell you you need a 10 speed specific RD, but I know plenty of folks that use a 9 speed easily since the RD is controlled by the shift mechanism. now bar tape is 9 and 10 speed specific ....

Do you know that for a fact?

I have used 9 spd crankset in an all 10spd drive train ... no problems.

I cant think of a reason why a 9spd rear derailleur cannot be used in a 10spd system. As mentioned before ... the shifter controls the rear derailleur movement.

FWIW. The REAR DERAILLEUR CABLE's anchoring position on the 9-speed & 10-speed SHIMANO rear derailleurs IS DIFFERENT ...

However, MY observation is that the Shimano 10-speed rear derailleurs can be substituted for a 9-speed Shimano rear derailleur + hubbub.com alternate rear derailleur cable anchoring COMBINATION ... OR, to translate for your desired application, you should be able to use your 9-speed Shimano rear derailleur with the 10-speed STI shifters & 10-speed Shimano cassette if you use the hubbub.com alternate rear derailleur cable anchoring position. NO GUARANTEES.

While, in theory, you CAN indeed use your current 9-speed Shimano rear derailleur if you were to switch to 10-speeds, why bother? Is it so you can spend more for a new cassette & pay more for your chains?

The so-called 10-speed chainrings on the 105 crankset are the SAME as the so-called 9-speed chainrings on the Shimano Tiagra crankset. You decide.

The reason i ask is because I like to know things before i get into the guts and $$ of it all. The other reason is that im buying the new kit from the UK and I dont want to have to order twice if I find out later on I need 9 speed specific chain rings or RD.

Mechanically I couldnt see a reason why the RD wouldnt work as the 10speed takes up the same amount of room as a 9 speed cluster. As someone else said, the STI/Barcons are the ones that determine the space one click goes.

FWIW, Shimano make most components "back compatible" not forward compatible.

For example, check the PDF on line for 6500 rear derailleur and you will find it is 9 speed back compatibe to 8 speed. I use them on tri bikes. If you check the sheet on 6600 RD, it is 10 speed, back compatible to 9.

10 speed Cranksets, this is a whole new ball game. If going Shimano, just stay with 10 if you want to use 10, particularly doubles, full sized or Compact.

The first question I would ask, is your frame designed for 10 speed components? Not all frames will work properly with outboard bearings. :eek:

Im not looking at saving myself $70 on a RD, but there is no need to upgrade if I dont need to.

This may be so, (back compatible), however the 9 speed spider is a different thickness and has a different chainline to the 10.

I suggest you phone Giant in Melbourne and ask, give them the number on the bottom bracket. What year is the OCR 0?

Yes to both, but front shifting would probably not be quite as crisp as with a 10spd crankset and FD. When I make the change, I'll keep the 9spd front end and RD.

Disagree from personal experience.

I've set up my partner's bike with a Shimano R4550 9sp crankset with a Tiagra 9sp RD, using 10sp cassette, chain and FD with absolutely no problems at all.

I suspect the lack of compatability may be a marketing ploy to sell more products, but then I don't know what they are thinking in the engineering or marketing departments.

FWIW, Shimano says that you can't use their Tiagra/105 9s chains with DA/Ultegra cassettes/chainrings. You can work out what a load of bulldust that is.

So the answer, in my experience, is yes to both, but as with anything that is outside the prescribed compatiability guidelines, YMMV.
