I've done some googling and found several reports from other heavy & strong
riders destroying the cheaper Shimano hubs so I guess it is me after all.

"I am a strong, rather agressive technical rider. I have broken other parts,
but this is ridiculous. Between this and my other rig, I have sent back at
least TWO DOZEN on warranty, sometimes at a rate of one every 2 weeks.
If you have any strength in your legs, or if you plan to do any riding other
than at the local municipal park, avoid Shimano hubs. You have been warned."
"I've stripped 3 freehubs (broken pawls, stripped ratchets, etc) in the last
three years (2 LX and 1 XT, the freehubs are all the same strength AFAIK).
If you are a heavy or strong rider that rides uphill, Shimano hubs will not
last."

"OK, I broke another Shimano freehub today, I now have broken 5 of them.
....I ride on rough steep horse trails. I weigh 280 pounds. My bike is a Trek
Liquid. The freehub breaks when I am climbing, usually a steep hill with
some rocks or something. It makes a Loud Clunk and usually won't disengage.
Sometimes it won't engage, either way its screwed."
