Road bike shoes strap to the outside; when the straps are up, they come towards the bike. Tri are the opposite. Further, tri shoes are single-strapped generally so less time spent strapping. Moreoever, they have a hole in the toebox to let water drain.

Most of the above doesn't matter, though. My road shoes have a hole, too. THey have three straps but I leave the front always done and the rear two duct taped together at their ends, functionally making them one strap so I use them happily in tris, the only shortcoming being that the straps open up toward the frame, but this has never caused me a problem.

You'll receive no consensus on this, whether you're looking at egg beaters, speedplay, shimano, etc. I personally went with shimano last year because I got, on ebay, new shimano road pedals for something like $60 and then bought used shimano carbon shoes for $60-70.

I was in the same position as you a few days ago. I got the shimano A520 pedals and Shimano MT40 shoes. I chose mountain bike shoes and pedals for my road bike because of the SPD cleats which are recessed so I can also walk on them.

I've tried both SPD and Look designs. Spd's are much easier to walk in, but I like the feel of the Look's when I'm on the bike,they seem like they are locking in better. It is a matter of personal preference.
