  1. I love them. I get mine raw and fresh from the local market,
microwave them on high for 1 minute and then medium for 3 to 4
minutes, tossing them frequently (to prevent burning and to achieve a
    golden hue).

No need to add salt or oil. This way you can taste the fragrance of
the cashew nuts. And think about the extra fats and salt you have
    eliminated.

You can do the same for Almond nuts, Pumkim seeds, Sunflower seeds.
    They taste equally great.

  3. This looks like a good article on cashews:
    http://www.wisegeek.com/are-raw-cashews-really-poisonous.htm

It turns out to be a question of how the word "raw" is used. Until this
moment, I thought I'd been eating raw cashews with no ill effect. It
turns out that the cashews that are sold as raw are really steamed. Who
    knew and go figure.

It's actually not very accurate. Cashews are roasted while in the
shell immediately as picked in the field in order to render the poison
in the shell harmless so that they can be handled to remove the
shell... in doing so the edible cashew gets roasted too.

    Raw is raw... no mystery.

They may be steamed (don't know whatever for) but first they were
roasted... perhaps in the steaming the visual evidence of the roasting
is somehow removed so that healthfood idiots (there is no such thing
as healthfood) will believe they are eating raw.

I've been to a cashew plantation in Belize. The nuts are roasted over
very hot fires within seconds of harvest. The smoke is highly toxic
so it is very important to be upwind and wear protective clothing.
Harvesting cashews is indeed a hellish job, why cashews are so
expensive. The best part of the cashew is the cashew apple... makes
    excellent wine.

Maybe you're full of [censored], Sheldon. There are cashews sold as "raw cashews" that
are indeed not raw. They are steamed but not roasted. There are apparently also
completely raw cashews. The toxin is urushiol, the same thing as in poison ivy.
It is in the shell, but not the nut. Normally during shelling, the nut is
contaminated, so it must be cooked. There are vendors selling cashews that they
claim are truly raw, shelled in a way that doesn't contaminate the nut with
urushiol. I don't know if this is true or not. Here is one site of many (that
all seem to have the same source) that sell truly raw cashews.

I have a cashew tree growing right in my own living room. I grew it from seed (a
raw cashew nut in the shell). It came from my father's cashew tree in Miami. I
have eaten the fruit off my father's tree and it has a very nice flavor. Rather
than eating it, you are really just chewing on the fruit to get the juice out,
then you spit the pulp out. I guess you could juice them, but there were never
enough off that one tree to bother. Here is a picture of my tree, which is now
2-1/2 years old. The tree is about 18 inches tall now:

    http://i9.tinypic.com/525vnnb.jpg

My cashew tree will never bear fruit and can never be planted outside, since it
is a tropical tree. I'm not sure how big it will get, but obviously no taller
than my eight foot ceilings. There's not a whole lot of gardening advice on
growing cashew trees indoors as a houseplant.

When my tree was sprouting, it looked much like the ones on this page:

    http://www.rawfood.com/cashews.html

A fairly complete description of the cashew tree:

Raw cashew nuts are not poisonous at all. Their shell, is. And
it's perfectly legit to get them "raw", where they are steamed to
open them, which destroys any poison residues.

Stick with me Sheldon, you might actually learn something. But
you'd still be spouting the same lies since you'll never learn

Great idea, thanks! We'll have plenty of pumpkin and squash seeds in
the fall so I can try that then. 🙂

I guess it does, now that you mention it. Avocado trees get a whole lot bigger
than cashew trees. My father didn't have an avocado tree, but there was one in
his next door neighbor's back yard. My father grew a lot of different tropical
trees besides cashew, including sugar apple, mango and sapodilla. He also grew
bananas and several kinds of citrus including orange, grapefruit, lemon and
    lime.

Sapodilla is one of the more interesting ones. It has a very unusual fruit that
roughly looks like a russet potato. The fruit has a very different taste and
texture. Sapodilla trees are also the source of chicle, which was used in
chewing gum... Chiclets. The IBM PCjr chiclet keyboard however is artificial,
not from the sapodilla tree! ;-)

Once again, Sheldon demonstrates his stupidity as he has on so many other
subjects. I should keep a list, but I don't have any paper that long.

It's a new twist on the old saying: "You can lead a horse to water, but you
can't make him drink". In Sheldon's case, it's: "You can take a moron to the
library, but you can't make him read". I provided him with more than enough
references on the topic, but as usual he can't be bothered with them. After all,
he thinks he knows it all.

I wonder what inaccurate information the old windbag will come up with next. One
never has to wait very long to find out.

Every so often (I don't understand if it's seasonal or regional), I find tubs

I don't mind the cashew oil. It helps keep my coat shiny. 😉

The oil that commercial cashew nuts have are some kind of vegetable
oil. Sometimes they make the cashew smell.
Maybe you are talking about a different oil?
I haven't seen Jumbo-sized too. Where can I find them? Thanks.

Wow, I felt so uneasy when I opened up and saw this first message. I
still do now after going through the rest.

Thanks for enlightening me , especially those that follows.

I have a question, Why do some individuals react this way, while

    opinion differ"?

This is what I am teaching my young children not to do. There is no
need to insult or saying hurting words, to get your point across.

it's perfectly legit to get them "raw", where they are steamed to

Couple of friends of mine have been working on cashew production
(growing the things) over the past several years. They bring some raw
kernels in for smoko in season. They (the kernels) are not bad to eat
raw, but I prefer them roasted and salted! :-)

The raw kernels are fairly white, but they can get brownish stains
from the oil from the shells due to the low tech shelling procedure
used by these blokes. So one has to be a bit selective when sampling
the things -- you really don't want to eat any of those stained
    portions!

One way of handling the things on the domestic scene is to freeze them
before shelling. If you don't try to do too many in one batch this
works okay -- the corrosive oil remains safely frozen in the shells
for awhile, but not for long! My personal recommendation would be to
buy the commercially processed raw kernels rather than stuff around
half the day to glean a few dollars worth yourself! (But I admit
that if I had a couple of cashew trees in the yard, I'd probably be
curious enough to give it a go -- I'm not a cat after all. ;-)

Don't forget that there are people like Sheldon in the world and it's a
good idea to let your children know this someday. He holds no particular
animosity towards you, he holds a peculiar animosity towards almost
    *everyone*.

I have to admit that he causes a lot of research on the part of others
who attempt to prove him wrong. But you'll only point out his error to
others and never to Sheldon himself for he is a caustic bore.
