My experience of walking holidays abroad is rather limited and I've
always managed with a 35 litre sack which is within airline limits for
hand luggage. Shortly I'm going to the Pyrenees and I need a rucksack
of 50 - 60 litres capacity. In these days of taller and narrower
rucksacks the ones I've looked at are too tall to come within the
airline's (BA in this case) 56x45x25cm (22x18x10in) requirements. I
was thinking of a North Face Terra 60 but its dimensions are 77cm x
34cm x 21cm, significantly smaller than the specification in volume
but also significantly taller. I don't know if the rucksack squashes
down when it's not full as this would solve the problem.
I could put the rucksack in my holdall which would solve that problem
but I would still need some sort of hand luggage for odds and ends on
the flight, and that adds to the weight. Plus, having had my luggage
go missing when coming back from my last trip, I want to be able to
survive if the same happens on my next outbound trip.
How do others cope with this situation?
