  1. Hi folks

For those who do not know of this race, you sail from Barmouth to Fort
William with runs up Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis on the way.
The race started Saturday with the lead boat in the North Channel and
most of the rest on Scafell Pike. There's results and live tracking of
the teams (on land and at sea) at http://www.sleepmonsters.co.uk

    Enjoy!

Why yawn? It's always looked great fun to me. (Not that I'm capable of
    running up a mountain.)

    Just for the record:-

For anyone contemplating taking part in this race, or it's lesser cousin,
the Scottish Peaks Race, if you don't have a very fast large trimaran or
cat, and know 2 of the best champion Cumberland Fell runners who don't
    suffer from seasickness, forget it!

Seriously, if you are bored with "normal" yacht racing, you should try this
race as an experiment, you won't regret it! Do not even contemplate taking
along runners who only run "on the flat", or can't cover 3 full marathons in
3 days at championship times, and are like human mountain goats!

Sleep? Forget it, possibly 2 hours snatched whilst your runners are away
from the boat. If they are away for longer than this you have no chance of
getting in the top ten finishers! Relief crew, no way, the rules don't allow
it. Runners are "dropped" whilst the yacht is still underway, anchor first
    and you are disqualified.

So you think you're a sailor? Oh! Oh! Oh!

"Ordinary" yacht racing is for cissies. This is a race for specialists!
    Leave the Stugeron at home!

    Dennis.

Anything to do with the Three Peaks has always attracted a lot of
discussion - not that we've had one for a long time. I suppose the line 'for
those who do not know of this race' is what prompted Martin to say Yawn. At
least these people are doing it the hard way! Just google 'Three Peaks' and
    this group..........

Forgot to mention that rowing is allowed, but unless you have sliding seats
fited to the genny car tracks, and real 12-foot sculling oars, and rowlocks
fitted, don't bother! We were overtaken by a one-design boat doing 4 knots
under human-power in a flat calm. Perhaps you should only take along
champion fell-runners who have sculled for Oxford or Cambridge, don't suffer
from seasickness, and sailors who can handle the boat in all conditions for
3-4 days without sleeping and row a dinghy-full of food and gear and 2
runners at breakneck speed away from a moving yacht under sail.

If you find such a crew, and have a super-fast tri or cat, LET ME KNOW!

    Interested?

    Dennis.

given the smaller numbers likely to be involved I suppose its not as
bad as the usual mass events

I last did the Scottish Peaks race in '92, and there were, as I recall,
about 50 starters. My impression was that regardless of how good a sailor
you were (and your sailing crew were!), the runners were the key to doing
well. My 2 runners, both experienced in half-marathon running, came back
with stories of being overtaken by several GIRLS, who came down the mountain
scree in leaps and bounds of over 20 feet, leaping over the heads of my 2
lads! This is no ordinary race, either for the sailors or the runners.

Obviously since '92 the rules will have changed, but I sincerely hope they
haven't made the race any easier!

    Dennis.

Disqualified? That sounds highly unlikely. Surely it's merely the
case that the rules don't happen to forbid the practice (and therefore
everyone does it because not doing so would give them a disadvantage),
but what purpose would be served by making the practice mandatory?
