I can only comment on Triglav National Park (in July 2005). As you suspect
there were plenty of people about - at least at that time of year. The
scenery was wonderful - there were walks for all ability levels.

Not been near Maribor but in the Triglav National Park the camping sites
I saw were on the fringes within the park there are numerous mountain
huts many of which provide basic accommodation.

Looking at the tourist map I have in the Pohorje region the only camp
site I can see is near Velenje but the Lonely Planet guide lists one 6km
from Maribor on Maribor Lake.

Not been near Maribor but in the Triglav National Park the camping sites I
saw were on the fringes within the park there are numerous mountain huts
many of which provide basic accommodation.

Looking at the tourist map I have in the Pohorje region the only camp site
I can see is near Velenje but the Lonely Planet guide lists one 6km from
Maribor on Maribor Lake.

Thanks both; maybe bearing that in mind, Triglav National Park might be the
best bet after all.

I have the Freytag & Berndt map, a result of a long-standing hope to
find the time to go walking in Slovenia, and it's pretty good. It
also has a booklet (in German) that lists details of the mountain
huts, of which there are many. I reckon it's easy enough to construct
a route that's as technical and difficult as you choose; the network
of paths through Triglav is quite extensive and offers a lot of
flexibility.

If considering the Triglav National Park Cicerone Press do a useful book
'Walking in the Julian Alps' by Simon Brown ISBN 1-85284-125-7. My copy
is dated 1993 so a bit dated now.

That's what I did - I found an outdoors shop, wish I could remember the
name of the shopping mall/arcade for you. 1:50 000 map, Geodetski Zavod
Solvenije. I think the Slovenian for mall is something like "galarie"
and... no, it won't come back. I got a reasonable pair of poles for ~30 EUR
too.

For accommodation, also consider state-sponsored B&B. The one I stayed in
near TNP (Dovje?) was cheap and comfortable. The BMC do an info sheet, too.

I really enjoyed my (short) stay - any country with mountains on its
national flag has to be worth a visit 🙂
