  1. Hi

When using tablets for water purification what is the
advantages/disadvantages of iodine and chlorine tablets? It seems as though
one is as good as the other.

    TIA

Unless you have thyroid problems or are pregnant (which I suspect
you're not), then I think Iodine would be preferable as I understand
it's more effective. Use neutralising tablets afterwards to remove the
    'cloudiness' and the chemical taste.

I've tried the iodine tablets and the neutralising tablet combo and the
    water tastes awful.

Maybe if you've got used to poor quality tapwater then it might be OK.

My tapwater comes straight off Snowdon (ov, via Llyn Cwellyn - that's
    another story!) and tastes good.

I'll now take a filter for summer when the rivers are flowing less freely,
or i need to use lake water (which isn't too tasty, but at least only tastes
earthy). After heavy rain or in winter i drink from the stream (within
reason) and it's the sweetest water you'll find.

BTW, my stomach might well be accustomed to the bugs as i was drinking
tapwater of a dubious bacterial quality for a fair while when the reservoir
    was contaminated with crypto.

Some people have problems with the taste of treated water. They are
cheap enough for you to try is and see what suits you.

If you do have taste issues with both then Aquamira might be better for
    you:

Down side is cost and it has a self life so if you use in infrequently
    it may expire.

    I'd suggest Aqua Mira

Looking at the manufacturers site they also do tablets...

    http://www.aquamira.com/consumer

....but I haven't found them available in the UK yet.

Most of the time I don't need purification being a fit and healthy
bloke who only drinks really wild water. If you need purification then
I think AM is the way to go

I've heard of Aqua Mira somewhere before. I keep thinking i ought to try it
    out!

I might do this year, pumping water through the filter is such a pain.

I've used Aqua mira a lot and it is always great and does the job well.
I've even seen it used in really poor water sources and it works very well.
Only problem is that I think you have to wait about 15 minutes for it to
work so it can be as time-consiuming as filtering but doesnt involve the
    work
