  1. I read SKS fenders use a special mounting system called "Secu-clip" which is supposed to prevent the
wheel from locking up if the fender bracket gets caught in the wheel.

Is that an important feature (on road-bike fenders)? How would brackets get caught in the wheel? If
they did, wouldn't the rider probably be headed for pavement in any event?

Is there a retrofit solution for fenders that come without this feature?

Not the bracket, a foreign object caught between the wheel and the stays/fenders - or maybe even the
stays themselves, if they come undone.

I suppose the idea is that the stays release from the clip so the wheel can continue to rotate
instead of locking. Dunno how effective it is but nothing is lost for having it.

Try and buy the SKS stays alone?

It's a nice-to-have, as plastic mudguards [1] will generally shatter, which is alarming but safe - I
saw this happen to someone on a CTC ride last month. My touring bike doesn't have these clips, but
the mounting bosses for the stays are halfway up the fork. This means that a branch caught between
the mudguard and tyre will tend to make the gap between the mudguard and tyre wider, and therefore
the wheel is less likely to lock. Stays bolted to the front dropouts carry more risk of a jam. All
this is more of a concern if you use metal mudguards, which won't readily break.

[1] In the UK a Fender is a brand of guitar, or a metal rail around a fireplace ;-)

I have a set of Zefal fenders that uses clips to attache the fenders to the mounting rods. I find
this, on the front fender, to be very annoying. The reason is that my bike has a bit of toe overlap.
I use this bike for commuting around the city so I have to start and stop often. I often hit the
fender with with foot and that causes it to pop out.

Can you eliminate the 'quick release and just bolt the stay directly? On the SKS release, it is
the same stay as before, with the eyelet (same as the back stays), that is pushed into the
    add-on release.

No, the clips are on the fender sides. They hold the rods that connect to the drop out. I may get
around to getting a different fron fender with a different mounting system.

Silicon or hot melt glue gun? Just nail them in place. And the glue won't be permanent. Not easy to
undo, but it can be pulled/cut away.

After the neat-o clipon system broke off the first time the fender got caught in some brush, I
grabbed a nail in a set of vice grips, took a blowtorch to it, then melted two holes in the right
places in my fender. Now, when it's wet and I want to use the fender, I just run some nylon wire
ties through the hole and around the fork crown. Been working a-ok for about a year now....

Oops! Neglected to say that it's supplemented with some strategically-placed velcro. It wouldn't
work without the velcro to locate/stabilize it.
