Went for a short walk yesterday. Great Gable via Base Brown and on the way back Brandreth and Grey Knotts. That's my round of the Birketts completed and another round of the Wainwrights.Must have been a bad day because no one responded to my good morning or good afternoon.
Two questions
Tightened my poles (original Leki Makalu Classics) up on Base Brown. Little click and the top section of one pole split from the grip to the plastic ferule. On closer inspection the other pole has signs of this about to happen.
Anyone had this happen before.
Second question
Socks (I know an often repeated question)
Have over the past 12 weeks gone through 2 pairs of superwool socks. First time I've tried them. Both ended up with holes in the toe area. Any recommendations for another type of good quality sock.

Milletts Coolmax socks - two pairs for about 14 quid are pretty decent. -- Bill Grey

Do you mean 'Smartwool'? If not, do give those a try - I generally get about 800+ miles per pair.

Yes did mean smartwool
Then you are doing something wrong - size too small? - or maybe you have talons instead of toenails? Mine wear out, if at all, in the heel area, and as I've said that only after 800+ miles, which I doubt you did in 12 weeks.
Try contacting the vendor - 12 weeks is not 'fit for purpose', unless it was your fault somehow. Maybe these were a dud batch. I mostly use the thick trekking ones mind.

I think the size is OK, it was chosen by using boot size. I suspect it is something to do with my toe nail, which even when cut back as far as is possible is still very close to the end of my toe. Smartwool seem very soft. So maybe that's the answer. I'm just trying some Bridgedale's, which seem to be ok so far.

No. But Leki are generally good and I would expect they'll probably back these up with their reputation. Get in touch and see what they say, UK importer is:

Hi Pete
emailed them in Germany on Saturday. Had a response already. Given a freephone telephone number to ring, which will give me a returns number.
Thanks for the UK contact . That might come in handy.
