Hi, I'm going to the Italian Lakes and staying in Menaggio on Lake
Como. I would like to do some 4 - 6 hour walks in the local area - Any
great ideas? Moderate preferred to Strenuous but if its to a great
view with a ridge I'll climb.
Thanks.

No personal experience but:

has this to say:
"Best Hike
There are some great hikes to be had in the hills and mountains around
Como. From Menaggio on the west side of the lake you can walk to top of
Monte Grona – 1736 metres up and about six hours walking time. For
this you need to be fit – it’s not for those who can’t remember
the last time they ran for a bus. The view from the top is stunning:
Lake Lugano in Switzerland to the west, virtually all of Lake Como,
Milan and the Po plains to the south, the Valtellina and higher Alps to
the north . The tourist office in Menaggio has other suggested hikes –
many less taxing than this one.

We're going to Lake Garda later in the year and are planning to attempt
the difficult and dangerous ascent of Monte Baldo (via the cable car
upwards, but we will probably walk back down!).
Have fun.

I experienced the pair of cable cars from Malcesine to Monte Baldo back in
2000, and pretty scary they were. Swaying all over the place and apparently
with no form of damping. I've been on quite a few others with no problems
at all.

Thanks for the warning. I'd better not tell my wife until we're on the
thing.

We took our MTBs up last year, no probs.
If it's windy, katabatic wind everyday, they
don't revolve it.

Thank you Neil, I think I'll avoid your dangerous ascent though.
Jack's Rake is my limit of bravado!

The cable car goes to the top of the ridge, and there's a waymarked
trail at the top apparently. On the way back down towards Malcesine is
Bar Prai, so although it's 5000 odd feet back down I think Jack's Rake
is probably dodgier. For one thing I don't remember anywhere to get a
drink half way down the Rake.....
