That ought to bring Lance out of the woodwork!

Who's Jurek? ( to anyone outside of David Horton wingnut world for
    runners?)

The country's best outdoor athlete? Oh gee, I don't know - I did see
Wednesday night at a ceremony honoring the 2007 ESPY winners {ESPN] ,
Dean Karnazes of San Francisco won the award at Hollywood's Kodak
Theatre for the country's best outdoor athlete. I also saw some
blurb about him running 5 consecutive Marathons in 24 hours...a couple
    weeks ago.

I've spoken to DK on a couple occasions, I like DK. DK's a business
man. I've ripped on Jurek in context to his competition forever on
rec. running, everybody knows that. He benefits from a low bar & thin
comp, google it if you're new to rec.running. Bottom line? No one
outside of Doug Freese and TrailRunner ever heard of Jurek. DK's on
Lettermen, DK is the only significant ultra runner in the world (other
than Ted Corbitt, the Black man that invented the sport of ultra
    running).

I had a respectable l0K today in Central Park, I think it was about
40:25 in July heat, l6th Master 40-44, l04th overall - any rumors of
my demise are exaggerated - looking to go l:26:xx in the NYC Nike Half
Marathon on Aug. 5th - excited Hallie Gebrselassie is in the race -
    the world greatest runner ever.

But Jurek? He's just minimal relevant to the landscaoe - few care.
Put some money carrots in these events and he's insignificant. How
many times have we posted his marathon times on rec. running? Please
please please don't point to Jurek as anything significant. Put a
Million Dollar Prize on the Hardrock l00, and Jurek would not finish
in the top l00. Keep it a no incentive event and he'll beat the [censored]
out of guys 50% older than him every time.

    Q. when the restaurant worker who work 60 hours a week, drove his own
car to the race, had minimal team, and slept on the course for half
an hour in Badwater '06 and lost to jurek by 20 minutes or so ( while
Jurek took his ice baths, etc.)...what cracks me up is amateurs like
this guy would beat Jurek easily if they took it seriously.

How old is Jurek now? 33? All I am saying is the sport of Ulta
runnign is so underdeveloped, today's benchmarks mean little to
nothing. Let the sport attract talent for some years - these current
records will all fall - when real athletes, NOT weekend warriors are
in the field. As of now? It's 95% weekend warriors, impressed with
themselves, and their running of 50 or l00 + miles.

Dk is a genius, I've said it here before, Jurek is is not significant
or relevant on the running landscape.

Having run 5 consecutive marathons in 24 hours myself, it hardly takes a
genius. Just an average (if that) ability runner.

Who's Jurek? ( to anyone outside of David Horton wingnut world for

"Lets take a look at Scott over the last 9 years:

7 Western States 100 mile victories- owns course record (99-2005)
2 Badwater 135 mile victories- owns course record (2005, 06)
1 Spartathon 153 mile victory- 2nd best performer ever (2006)
1 Hardrock 102 mile victory- owns course record (2007)"

And DK gets a fluffy Espy award. I think he got 1 or maybe 3 votes for
Ultra runner of the year by his peers. Once again your backing a better
than average runner that can't even hold Jurek's jock. And what record
does DK hold, psst, absolutely none unless hype and bull hit has a award
    structure

Return to politics and follow your buddy Sharpton - a great example to
help you move forward in life in the political BS race.

Values efforts to prop mediocrity of Scott Jurek. Not mediocrity
within Ultras, that's the shallow pool of the running world,
mediocrity across the board of runners. As is well documented, last
year neophyte Akos Konya who worked 60 hours/week as an asst mgr at a
restaurant showed up at Badwater off of 60 mpw training - he took 2nd
place behind Jurek @ Badwater 135 by 17 minutes, he slept on the
course in the race for 30 minutes. All facts.

Jurek's never faced competition, his accomplishments have all come
when he's the young buck on the course, everyone else is 50% older
than him, who gives a damn if he won a race at age 30 when everyone
else was 40+? He literally got these achievements against a field of
    Masters. Woo Hoo.

DF, you should know better than to try and quip with me on Jurek,
Ultra Running, and running. I am the dog, you are the tail, I wag
you, you don't wag me. Guess what Doug, I've become good friends with
Ted Corbitt, the BLACK man that invented your sport, he lives in
Queens, alive and well at 84. Ted used to run 20 miles to work in
the morning, and then again 20 miles back home - the guy used to
clock 200 and 300 mile weeks. I kid you not.

Anyway yes, I'm too busy to give the fringe attention, good luck to
you Doug w/your flock and racing. No hard feelings - got much respect
for your contribution to the world of running - I get kind of tired as
a NYC taxpayer carrying the weight and paying the freight for you all
upstate - but it's okay. Good luck,

Konya had run a few ultras before (including a 100 miler), although he
wasn't as experienced as Jurek (and I don't know that ultramarathoners
typically put in huge mileage). I would point out, however, that
relative newcomers have also popped up and won marathons, but that
doesn't mean that marathon runners are idiots and dilletantes.

Of course, you aren't interested in a rational argument. Yes, yes, yes,
Paul Tergat would run Badwater in about 20 hours while carrying a
cinderblock in each hand and he would stop for pizza and a nap on the way.
We all know that. However, until he shows up and claims the record that
is rightfully his, a faker like Jurek will be the record holder.

1 Spartathon 153 mile victory- 2nd best performer ever (2006)
1 Hardrock 102 mile victory- owns course record (2007)"

Values efforts to prop mediocrity of Scott Jurek. Not mediocrity
within Ultras, that's the shallow pool of the running world,
mediocrity across the board of runners.

Mediocrity is rather pejoritive but I will say that the sport is young
and we are getting better and better runners ecah year to include people
like Jurek. In effect I expect times to continue to fall over the years.
Just another course record on one of the hardest courses. He seems to be
cherry picking all the 'easy" races and taking on all who show to
    include Meltzer who is phenominal.

"took on some of the world's top ultrarunners at the Spartathlon and
scored a decisive victory, clocking the second-fastest time in the
history of the event, considered one of the world's classic
    ultramarathons."

Guess what Doug, I've become good friends with Ted Corbitt, the BLACK
    man that invented your
sport, he lives in Queens, alive and well at 84.

From what I understand about Ted is he was not just a great runner but a
class guy. I'd be willing to bet he would consider Jurek the best we
have to date. Maybe you should actually talk to him about the sport,
you could learn something especially if you think DK is anything more
than a better than average runner with a publicist. When you don't have
talent you need the press. Keep hangin' with Sharpton, he'll show you
    how to manipulate the truth.

Heh, *of course* he would make a mockery of the course record first
time out, with pizza breaks and naps, and he could do it while
stricken with a killer flu and still finish fresh as a daisy, et
    cetera.

But a cinderblock in each hand? Now *that's* a little hard to
swallow. You think this fellow can even lift a cinderblock with one
    hand?

He may be a little beefier than his countryman, the (pretty much
    literally) ninety-eight pound weakling Rotich:

but he's assuredly no Karno. Hmmm, maybe lance is such a DK fan out
of solidarity (1) with the, uh, fuller figured runner.

    (1) pun intended, natch

Who's Jurek? ( to anyone outside of David Horton wingnut world for
    runners?)

The country's best outdoor athlete? Oh gee, I don't know - I did see
Wednesday night at a ceremony honoring the 2007 ESPY winners {ESPN] ,
Dean Karnazes of San Francisco won the award at Hollywood's Kodak
Theatre for the country's best outdoor athlete. I also saw some
blurb about him running 5 consecutive Marathons in 24 hours...a couple
    weeks ago.http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=n...

DK's on
Lettermen, DK is the only significant ultra runner in the world (other
than Ted Corbitt, the Black man that invented the sport of ultra
    running).

    1) the ESPY criteria (and yours as well, apparently) for getting
nominated was best PR campaign for meaningless outdoor stunts. I can
    see why you like DK.

    2) ragging on Scott Jurek for his marathon times is like ragging on a
marathoner for their lack of world class 400m speed. You ought to
know better than to sneeze at anyone's effort in the marathon--can you
tell us how easy it is to run 2:38?

    3) I assume that you have completed some 100 mile trail runs.
Otherwise, regardless of your claims, you are NOT an expert on ultra-
marathons, you are the proverbial armchair expert--be honest, would
you have any respect for someone spouting off who had only read about
    marathons?

    4) I don't deny that it is possible that certain (current) ultra-
marathon records may be proven "soft." But there has been tremendous
growth in the sport and winning a major ultra would not be easy for
    any runner.

Can you point to some specific claim of Scott Jurek's that put a bug
up your butt? To put Dean Karnazes on a pedestal and then badmouth
    Jurek makes absolutely no sense.

Jurek did run the race and set the record with a sprained ankle.

All his efforts are via the keyboard. We have been trying to get wussy
boy to do the dinky Escarpment trail race which is close and only a 30k.
He always finds some excuse which is usually injuries beacuse he thinks
all real runners need mega miles. As thet say, all show, no go.

Definitely. There is even room for keyboard Lance to step up and make
his mark but with his feet. 🙂

He is lot like those that see or talk to Paris Hilton and then think she
can act. He ran Lance's beloved NYC marathon and can now do no wrong.
DK's multi-marathon effort was an admirable feat and no runner will take
that from him. But sad to say that his accomplishment and much more have
been set by many others before him that chose to do it sans any
publicity. For some reason it is a very quiet sport with built in
    introverted humilty.

In a positive light, not necessarily the clononoscopy light, he did
help create awareness to the sport and more people are entering the
game. If he hadn't lied or BS'ed his credentials and achievements he
would not be perceived as disingenuous by his peers. You can BS the
masses but not your fellow runners and why he go so few votes by his
peers for Ultra runner of the year. If he had only played it straight
and truthful we wouldn't be having this discussion.
