The problem I had with the joints between the 1st and 2nd toe is better but the toe itself is still a problem, I think it's calcified around the joint from irritation, rubbing against the shoe etc.. I think this was actually the result of too much temporary correction under the metatarsal for a while. The bottom line is I don't think it will ever be straight again without surgery.
Anyone have any tales of success or failure to share who's had hammer toe surgery?

I'm not big on surgery. Calcification can go away when the stress is removed. It takes time. I put so much support under the metatarsal that I cracked two of them. When my toes are pinched or rubbing, I cut the shoes, not my feet.

I'm not big on it either, just curious as to others experience. I wear a toe cap with the end cut off over the joint and that has stopped the irritation. Ironic that it's called a hammer toe, sometimes I feel like taking a hammer to the joint.

Well, I give you credit for working on the shoes to avoid the trauma. Keep it up. When I create an opening that is too wide sometimes I glue a piece of stretch cloth over the hole to prevent dirt and stones from getting in. Some shoes don't need to be cut, but I don't hesitate when comfort is improved by modification. Sometimes I cut a starburst directly over a hot spot. Other times I need a semicircle cut from the front to just behind the toes.
