  1. OK, I finished my first 10K just over an hour and a half ago. I was
very pleased with my run, especially considering that the run was on
the sand and it was 80 degrees by start time.

    I started out too fast.

    Mile 1 - 7:54.9

Got closer to my projected pace during second mile.

    Mile 2 - 8:49.2

Right on pace for third mile.

    Mile 3 - 9:07.2

Paid for the fast start during the fourth and fifth mile.

    Mile 4 - 9:30.4
    Mile 5 - 9:42.3

The was no 6 mile marker, lazy race coordinators I guess.

    Mile 6 plus last .2

    11:19 a 9:25.8 pace

I was very happy that I was able to speed up the last mile and some.
By the time I was getting close I was beat. Plus they only had warm
    water at the end.

My total time was 56:23 @ a 9:05.6 minute per mile pace.
I thought I could run it at a 9 m/m pace so missing it by only 5
seconds per mile is not disappointing at all.

I do know that I finished 6th in my age group, 40-44, but they don't
have it online yet as the 5K was yet to be run when we left. Funny
thing, if I had been in the 25-29 (I think) I would have finished
third. And if I had been on the 30-34 (I think) I would have finished
    second.

I will post links as soon as they are available.
    Overall a good experience.

Congratulation Techguy! 10K down, HM to go.

That is good considering it being your first and the conditions.

    | I do know that I finished 6th in my age group, 40-44,
6th of how many in the AG?

Up in New England I do 7:1x m/m, still end up
just above the middle of the pack in the same AG.
I found this to be the toughest and deepest AG around here.
I should race in FL to bump up my ego a bit. 🙂

    Keep up the good work!

Well... hard to get a good initial pace. Did you do some warm up?

Sand will generally slow folks down by softness, and open terrain in
direct sun may make it feel hotter.

  9. Great race. What with the sand, the temperature and your fast mile, you
    probably gave up several minutes.

The fact that you could go 1 minute faster than pace means you have a lot of
    improvement left.

My all out mile pace is less than a minute per mile off of my 10k pr, and
I'd bet that holds true for the experienced racers out there.

True, but absolute terms are a bit misleading. I'm 5:30 vs 4:40, which is less
than a minute, but if you take ratios instead, it translates to about 1:20-1:30
for someone who can run a mile in 8 minutes. My fall off is close to that of
the fast mile guys (it scales to about 28:00 off a 3:50)

Having said that, I'd tend to agree that beginners fall off very quickly in
pace from mile to 5k (likewise, my distance paces take a bigger hit than my
mile pace if I'm out of shape)

    Cheers,

Congrats. Those were very tough conditions, both the temperature and the
surface, so you will probably find yourself getting pretty fast in following
    races, especially following summer.

Starting out too fast is almost inevitable in the first race, the saying
"good judgment comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgment"
is more true than ever when it comes to pacing.

  12. Congrats! Those were not ideal conditions for a race (sand and
heat), but you still finished close to your projected pace. More
even pacing will come with time and experience!
