  1. I either start out too fast so that I cramp up during my morning run
or I start out too slow and get cramp up when I try to speed up. My
understanding of cramps is they are a build up of lactic acid. Which
is a waste product of your muscles.

Does anyone have tips or suggestions on how to avoid this problem?

What would happen if you started "too slow" and didn't try to speed up ?

What is your criterion for deciding that you are going "too slow" anyway ?

no, they have nothing to do with lactic acid

slow down, stretch before you run especially in the morning.

He wouldn't have to make stupid posts to newsgroups, that made him
    look like an amaturish moron?

His granny passed him using her walker.

Donnie you numnutz dumbass, once again you run afowl of the true
intent of a post. He is obviously talking about MUSCLE cramps, which
can be caused by a buildup of lactic acid in the muscles.

Do NOT listen to the below advice about stretching before a run. It is
well known that stretching cold muscles increases the risk of injury.
IMHO stretching at all causes injurys in many people.

This is obviously a joke, because Donniekins is not usually this ill-
    informed.

Ditto Elflord's comments. Try the "right" pace / effort, which may
actually be slower than what you are running. You don't give any
details, which would help. Just stay at conversational effort. Cramps
can come from a number of problems, like electrolyte imbalances.

  6. Adjust your speed to a good comfort level.
Make sure you drink lots of water before your run.

I have a similar problem. I ran in both hs and College and even that
didn't teach me. But maybe you can learn better than me. Find a
running partner for equal fitness and pace together. It might help
