My wife has not run for many years and as part of a diet programme, she would like to exercise. I run frequently and would dearly love to help her but do not know where to start. I relish the thought of us enjoying a fun run together in the future.
Can anyone either suggest a suitable starter programme or point me to a good website that may help?
Thanks in anticipation.

Most of the beginner running programs start off walking for 20 minutes or so, with small jogging breaks. As you progress (weekly) add more jog time to replace some of the walk time.

Runners world I'd reckon
12 months ago this week I did the Lung Run 10K and my wife annouced out of the blue she'd like to do it this year. But she was 18+ stone and had never run at all . We'd done a little work in the gym and a little cycling but nothing serious. We embarked on a walking programme first building over a few monbths to 45 mins brisk walking three times a week, then we progressed to run/walk - only a minute at first then building to several minutes and shorter walking breaks. We got this out to over 5K then began running 30mins then 40 etc. The Race she was going to do changed distance and date so we're racing together on the 13th may - a 10K . We ran the route this morning in 1;21 - it's remarkably hilly and though she has lost nearly 5 stone she is still carrying quite a bit.
Nothing can beat going out with a partner , the races now will gives us shared experiences , though I'm only running this first one with her .
Any basic run/walk programme will work but the key is to follow it religiously - going too far too soon makes for injury. My wife has had no injury at all apart form a turn ankle on a dodgy kerb.
We just did the first part of Cool Running's programme:
Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes.
But it's a start and I am so proud of her. I run more frequently and it's great fun to be together besides this is a nice rest on a non-running day for me. Tomorrow is a rest day for her, so I'll run 10k.
