  1. Lately my arthritc knee has been a real pain, usually it just
feels real stiff for about the first 2 miles, then it alternates
between dull pain and sharp pain. I've been taking 81 grain aspirin
for about 6 years now on the advice of a doctor. I read somewhere
that taking ibuprofen can interfere with the blood thinning properties
of aspirin, anyone know if thats true? I've also heard that ibuprofen
dosen't work as an antiinflamatory until you've taken several doses,
any truth to that? 400mg of ibuprofen after a run seems to work for
the reat of the day on the knee pain. There must be others in this
group with a bit of arthritis, how do you deal with it?

I don't have arthritis, but I do take glucosamine with MSM and
chondroitin as a preventive measure. I'd be careful with that
ibupropfen, it's reputed to interfere with kidney functionality.

    arthritic knee [...] ibuprofen

I ran across this cream containing ibuprofen to be applied externally
    the other day:

    http://heelspurs.com/cgi-bin/c/store/commerce.cgi?product=creams

Not an endorsement; just passing along a link. No idea how well it
works or whether external application diminishes the risks associated
with chronic internal use. For that matter no experience with
arthritis or knee pain, aside from ITBS. Like Sergeant Schultz, I
    know nuh-think.

The glucosamine et al Mark mentions sure seems to have a fan base, and
also seems to be widely considered very safe. To my understanding
that's more of a long-term aid, as opposed to a quick bandaid of pain
    relief and inflammation control.

I don't have arthritic knee, but did damage to meniscus a couple of months
back while dragged down by my dog. I might have been close to it without
the help of the dog, as I was running more and doing weights, when I wasn't.

To overcome my trouble I had lot of rest, iced and got serious about the
supplements. I had been a hardcore vegetarian for last 10 years,
but decided to tone it down and take glucosamine and eat seafood.
The meniscus is completed healed, but now have some trouble
with tendons on the problem left leg when I race hard.
This might be due to not having enough strength in my left leg, I think.
I also use knee brace when I run faster or longer now.
Also biking a lot to build leg strength and walking more.
They all seem to have collective influence on my healing process.

Thank you all for the replys. I've been doing the Chondroitin/
Glucosamine thing for about 2 years now (I believe it works). The
arthritic knee had meniscus tear which was scoped out in 2002, thats
when the doc told me there was arthritis in it. I certainly don't
want to do long term ibuprofen, which is why I asked if there were any
other choices. For me to stop running is not an alternative, I've
been using some Icy/Hot rub in cream that gives a bit of relief. Hey
what the hell, runners all deal with some pain?

I stopped Gluc and Condro after reading that several studies showed no
    effect.

I just take a high phyto-nutrient multi vitamin (gotta tank up on those
anti-aging chemicals like resveratrol) and an Omega-3 oil cap.

Same here. I was taking it for a while, not as a preventative, but was
suffering from some knee pain about a year ago. The knee pain mysteriously
went away without the chondroitin. It is listed under "Non FDA, alternative
medicine" in the software the pharamcists use in our hospital. Some people
swear by its effectiveness. However, this may be purely antecdotal

  8. Asking joggers for medical advice is like asking your cat to do your
    taxes.

  9. I have had trouble on and off for several years with knee and hip pain. My
physician encouraged glucosamine with chondroitin. I also took ibuprofen
during the acute phase of my knee and hip pain. Now I only take the
glucosamine/chondroitin. I can tell a big difference if I miss a few days.
I also ice for about 15 minutes with a gel reusable ice pack after long or
    hard runs.

    It works for me

  10. wrap them all;
not too tight fo too long because well cause skin cuts and blood.
like if you do 4 all the time and then in pain till a.m.
so wrap and now it is at 6 miles and pain.

so you try for 8 iles and you have big cuts.

because if you wrap round things for too long.

    well there it is.

try making a removing cast for a leg when you sleep. seems to help for a
day with out the wrap. butt stop cold turkey and again in pain.........

I stopped Gluc and Condro after reading that several studies

I am continuing to take it because it seems to work for me. I
used to experience fairly frequent sharp knee pains (runner's
knee, I guess). Since taking up Gl/Ch/MSM, it seems to have gone
away. Now, is that because of the supplements, or is it because
my training has considerably strengthened the muscles and ligament
supporting the knee? I don't know, but the supplements are a
cheap insurance just in case they are responsible.

Some studies may well show these supplements are ineffective, but
I say if it does no harm and may work anecdotally, there's not a
compelling reason to stop. But it's almost a matter of faith.
It's like some people who believe that cramps are caused by
insufficient hydration, despite studies that show no correlation.
But if it works for the individual, then why not.

    I take some kind of a one-a-day vitamin thingy. I don't even
know what's in it, but the name and simplicity of it appeals to
me. As far as resveratrol, I looked into it, but apparently you
have to take fairly large quantities of a highly purified form for
it to be effective. So I have resigned myself to getting my doses
from Cabernet and peanuts, which also happen to be in some of my
    favorite food groups.

Whether it is plecebo or it only helps those left handed with a 3
degree pronation and 6 foot tall running in Asics is another discussion
    point.

It does seem to offer antinflammatory relief in some people. The notion
that it helps to re-grow cartalege is BS hype and never been proven.

Does this mean I have to go to church?

FWIW so do I. As much as I'd like to think I eat a perfect nutritional
diet I know better. Taking a one-a-day even if not needed will do no
harm. Besides the RDA's suggested are for those that ride the Lazyboy.
I think athlete's (if slow runners, you know, that influx of god awful
4+ hour marathoners, are allowed to be considered athletes) RDA demands
are higher then those riding the pine.
