It's very probable, and every day it's always more probable. The
Vesuvius is not showing any activity, while Etna (in Sicily) otfen
does, so Etna is discharging it's potential, while Vesuvius is
building up an incredible amount of energy, and when the pressure will
be enough it will explode in a dreadful eruption. The last one
happened during the second world war and the american troops filmed
it, the images of lava quickly reaching nearby towns are terrific, and
IIRC some of the lava also reached the outskirts of Naples.
Etna makes much more noise due to it's frequent eruptive activity, but
this way it keeps itself far from building up a destructive pressure
and lava mass, so it will never be a big danger for it's area.

No...The website that tracks it's status says it's condition
green..which means nothing going on.

Maybe. But not while were here...and even if it does go I"m out of the
blast zone which means that we may get some broken windows, but nothing
major...I'm north east of it.

Local officials say it's not. But who knows for sure? The geological
service also says it's not BTW...

O got part of a show about Vesuvius last week. It is a scary proposition to
be located close to that one. It's history shows a pattern of reduced
activity followed by a major eruption, then minor eruptions every 10-20
years with decreasing frequency and then a big one. Right now it is in a
period of reduced activity, so if the pattern continues, Naples is in for a
big one sometime in the not too distant future.

The government knows that 800,000 people need to be relocated and the
area made into a national park. The problem is convincing those people
and finding acceptable resettlement homes. One day it will be Pompeii
all over again.
