  1. That won't cause me severe gastrointestinal distress.

I've been trying to eat more fresh/raw vegetables, and a variety of such
vegetables. However, I ate some fresh broccoli, which caused me terrible
intestinal gas/grumbling/bloating. Are there other raw vegetables to
    avoid?

    One way to find out...

Some people have trouble with cucumbers, for instance; I don't.

Darn. I wanted it to be easy! I also have no problems with cucumbers,
    radishes, etc.

Are you eating anything with them? Personally, veggies tend to keep me
"going" and don't cause what I consider terrible grumbling (you want
terrible - eat a pile of SA-loaded candies!).

I've done that, too -- once.

I'm usually not bothered by gas either, but the only thing I can ascertain
caused me this problem is raw broccoli, which is too bad, as it's tasty.

  6. There is a diet called SCD for people that have various intestinal
problems. It seems somewhat based on a paleo style diet. The carbs that are
recommended for people with IBS, Crohn's etc. are simple one molecule
sugars, or foods that can be broken down that way by cooking. Cooking some
foods will break down the poly or di-saccharides into mono-saccharides, as
in potatoes, or wheat, otherwise we wouldn't be able to digest them very
well. Someone suffering from IBS would need to take this to another level to
find foods they can eat without them bothering their guts.
Some people, so the book claims, lack or do not have the enzymes
necessary for breaking down the more complex carbs. There is a book called,
"Breaking the Vicious Cycle" by Elaine Gottschall.

    http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/

Maybe you don't have Crohn's or IBS, but reading the book or the SCD
websites may help to understand the theories about how the carbs that are
not properly broken down, just end up feeding bacteria in the intestine that
causes gas and irritation in some.

    http://www.healingcrow.com/dietsmain/scd/scd.html

Based on the information I have read, it seems that fiber may not be so
    friendly after all.

There was an article I read a while ago that suggested that the bacteria
in the gut may determine why we gain weight and others don't. I think that
what you eat may determine the type of bacteria that can survive. If someone
ate a lot of carbs, they would likely have more bacteria that thrive on
sugars and undigestable (to us) fiber. These bacteria may be beneficial to
get more energy from the plants we eat. If these bacteria are lacking or not
in overgrowth, then perhaps the more complex carbs that we are not normally
able to digest may be treated as fiber, and pass through without getting the
    energy from them.
These theories may explain why some get gas and others don't. Or not.

  7. BOB,

Try BEANO (or other gas-reducing product). Many veggies like broccoli just
take some getting used to, when you haven't eaten them for a while (or
    ever).

The body will adapt, and then you won't need the BEANO. Sure, you may not
adapt to everything, due to disease, or allergies, etc, but don't give up on
    the first bad experience. :-)

    HTH,

    Steve

  8. You know, I never thought of Beano. I'll give that a try.

Here's a list link to foods to watch if you have a senstive stomach.
YMMV. I think that it's meant to be a starting point.

I don't mind the farting or crapping, but this actually physically hurts
(and makes sounds so loud I'm sure then can be heard at least 10 feet away
-- and that's just during digestion; when it comes, whoa Nellie!).

Well, we are all individuals and what works well for some won't
necessarily work well for all. It's a starting point, at least.

  16. I couple of weeks ago I started having tremendous problems digesting
practically anything--sharp doubling over in pain after eating.. I got some
Probiotics and took a capsule once a day for three days. The problem went
away. I think something might have killed off my good bacteria. Maybe it
was a particularly potent batch of jalapenos...something did it.

I got these probiotics a year ago after taking an antibiotic for a couple of
weeks. That definitely killed off the good flora in my intestines. These
are like yoghurt on steroids and you get them in the chilled section of a
health food store. Not cheap, but they last a long time in the refrigerator.
I mean, not just lactobacillus but a bunch of other similar ones.

I'll have to look into those. I also think that I have a particular
vitamin/mineral that also doesn't agree with me. I need to figure out
which one, and I've been narrowing it down, but darn the thing makes my
    stomach growl.
