Ugly Tomatoes

In my fairly sleepless state last night I turned on the TV and found an
Infomercial about tomato plants. They didn't mention this variety but said
you could get Beefsteak *climbing* tomato TREES. Only $32. Huh? And for
free they'd throw in another sort of tomato vine. Have your credit card
ready! The tomatoes looked sickly and pale. Trust me, it wasn't my
television set. It's not time for tomatoes here yet even were I so inclined
to try to grow them on my patio (which I'm not).

Look for a local mom & pop nursery. A women operates one a few towns
from here and has 40+ varieties of tomato plants including the heirloom
types. And the interesting thing is they are half the price of the lower
quality plants at the big box place.

I think that was right after the vertical chicken cooker commercial. I
saw what was probably the same commercial. You hung the thing up, added
water and almost instantly had hundreds of tomatoes...

Funny you should say that. Just yesterday I visited a place that is
sort of out of the way, and they are turning their property into
an open-to-the-public type of nursery operation. I will be sure
to check with them. Nice young couple, I wish them the best.

I think I may actually try..since for once we're staying put for 3
years. What I really want to grow on my patio are these gorgeous
italian lemons that I see everywhere..they get almost as big as
cantelopes here...beautiful! But I'd have to ditch the tree in 3 years
when we move.

Where do they come up with this stuff. And I could buy a whole lot
of tomatoes for $32 plus shipping, with the added bonus they won't
be dropping out of my trees.

I may have missed some earlier stuff in this thread but are Ugly
tomatoes the same as "heirloom" tomatoes? Store-bought heirlooms
may taste good but they certainly look like the genetic
engineering had gone seriously wrong :-) I've been eating
tomatoes for longer than I care to admit but I don't ever
remember those peculiar shapes and colors when I was a child and
my grandfather never grew anything like them.

(laugh!) Luckily for us. If you like tomatoes, and you see an
Ugly Ripe (sp), pick one up. It's a nice tomato, and I have seen
them in the stores during the winter, when a good tomato is hard
to find.

In addition to my thanks for the reference may I add that I have
been doing some investigation too and there is evidence that the
original tomatoes brought to Europe did not look like the
heirloom tomatoes I have seen in stores and may have been more
like cherry tomatoes and quite possibly often yellow in color.

Silly! It was this hanging thing that grew tomatoes on it. They called it
a tree but it was really just a strange tomato vine holder-upper. And ONLY
$32. Call now!

(laughing) I guess I didn't read closely enough, I thought it was
a growing system that worked so well, your tomato vines would
grow grow grow up into the trees like a magic bean. Something
I nevered actually wished for.
