Who would have thought steaming your organic veggies could result in
cancer, autoimmune diseases, food allergies and birth defects?
Consider that the heating element in some veggie steamers (ie Black &
Decker) is coated with a Teflon/SilverStone-like material. These
materials belong to the Perfluorochemicals (PFCs) that are
ubitiquious. It is showing up in household vacuum bag samples, city
water samples, blood samples, embilical cords of babies and even in
blood samples from polar bears. Because PFCs don't break down easily,
they continue to accumulate in the environment. In the human body,
PFCs have a half life of about 4.4 years. PFC-derivatives are now
being recognized as Endocrine Disruptors; chemicals that alter the
hormonal signaling associated with development, growth, immunity,
etc.
