Functionally none,but cogs mounted on carriers can usually be made lighter.

Increased rigitity and spreading the load when in lower gears.
Smaller cogs can be replaced individually as they wear faster.

Actually, if riveted as in the case of 105,the rivets can be removed and any cog replaced. Being permanently affixed to carriers is another story. Not sure just what type the poster is referencing.

i guess im talking about 105 style. Im not too sure what you mean by "permanently affixed"?.

Look at an ultegra or DA The bigger cogs are mounted on alloy carriers and cannot be frigged with like the riveted ones.
