Enter "from:london to:bristol" (for instance) into the search field, and
the first line of the result gives the distance (118 miles in this case).

Try http://www.uk.map24.com/ You can use it as a route planner. Beyond that
you can use "distance measuring tool" directly in the map, also with
multiple points. You can also change the route configuration to pedestrian,
so one-way streets are avoided. It's a bit slow though on older computers.

It is associated with the BikeRadar site (new Cycling Plus/Pro Cycling/What
Mountain Bike/MBUK combined site), and is using the Google Maps API.

Its advantage over Google Maps' standard interface is that is can draw route
altitude profiles. When viewing a route, the option is under the 'Show menu'
on the left.

It is a community site, where anyone can submit their routes.

Just tried this for my route to work, it gives a distance
of 9.6 miles, and a time of 37 minutes.
My average time is about 32min, and my best 28.
Also measured this as a mile shorter.

It does suggest a route that is 0.7 miles and nine minutes
quicker, I will have to try that. (Although I doubt I will
I will be nine minutes quicker).

Great thing with the new directions on the google maps is you can drag
the routes round to adjust them to check out various alternate routes.

Though it does seem to get confused a little with the profiles - I
uploaded my recent training route and it was showing greens on the ups
as well as downs, and the total rise/fall made no sense at the end.

Try Marengo, http://www.marengo-ltd.com/map/

It's built to prepare routes with Google Maps for a GPS, but calculates
distance once you've put in your turning points - could be a bit tedious
on a long trip, though.
