Dawes Casettes ?

How many miles has the chain done ? - may be stretched, which will in turn
wear the cassette and front chainwheels more rapidly - giving the symptom
you describe which sounds as if it's "chain suck"

.... and AFAIK the cassettes on Dawes machines are just standard Shimano ones
and not Dawes specific

The bearings in your freewheel are rusted out causing high drag in
freewheeling mode. If you have a Shimanohub replacement is
straightforward, if it is a vague taiwanese copy Dawes might be able to
come up with a replacement. In the latter case I would also investigate
replacing the entire wheel with a basic shimano-hubbed one, especially
if the rear rim shows wear

Dawes at one time were using hubs which were not compatible with either
Shimano, Campagnolo or SRAM. According to a thread on this group about two
months ago this was a result of a supplier supplying the wrong stuff...

However, from your description it does not sound like a cassette problem,
it sounds like the ratchet in your freehub has seized up. It should be
possibly to strip and clean the freehub, but it will be fiddly.

As others have suggested I think it would be worth replacing the hub with a
standard one. Which standard doesn't matter very much. A new hub will
solve any freehub problem, and a new standard hub will fit a standard
cassette, which won't need to be specially ordered and which will provably
be cheaper for equivalent quality.

Our bike club has a meeting at Fishers Lane community centre, not far
from where your email address indicates that you are, on Thursday
evening at 8:30. If you fetch the bike along, someone can have a look at
it and perhaps give you a second opinion ( and maybe a 4th and 5th as
well :>😉

unless they're Miche ones in which case you could be months faffing
about trying to sort out what would otherwise be a simple job.
