I'm looking at a couple of new cassettes for my bike and there are 2 9-speed Shimanos whose only difference (aside from price) is one is described 12t and the other is 11t... what is this difference? Type of metal? # of teeth? Ratio of gears? Thank you.

The smallest ring has either 11 teeth or 12 teeth - that's your HIGH gear, the other thing to think about is the largest ring - especially if you live in a hilly area and are concerned about having a LOW enough gear. If you are comfortable on hills a 25 should be fine for nearly anything. If you need a little lower gearing look for a 27 or even a 29. Usually the description will read something like a 9 speed 12-27 cogset so that you know what gearing you are getting. (edit* - the hubby says depending on your bike you might not be able to run a 29 on the back without having a long cage derailleur)
