What does the group recommend that I put on the threads of a bottom bracket before I put it in the BB shell?
In the past I have used both straight forward grease and Copper Ease but have still had the threads either rust away or the BB weld itself into the BB shell.

John T.
Anything, as with modern cranksets this has ceased to be a problem. The bearings won't last long enough!

Copper grease.

I've never had any problems with Copper Ease or regular grease. What are you doing to give the bike such a hard life - riding in the sea, jet-washing with hot water and detergent?

I think copper antiseize is still your best bet. Try using more of it, and don't leave it a very long time before removing and replacing/refitting the BB.

From what people have told me here and also some excellent advice from some work colleagues I will use more Copper Ease this time.
As for using the bike, I use it every day all through the year. I try to keep it clean using car shampoo and a gentle rinse. Should I use preparatory bike cleaning stuff - I have always thought of this as a bit of a gimmick.
What your doing already should be OK as long as your not tipping buckets of water around the bottom bracket, or using a hose to rinse. Even a dribbly low pressure hose is more risky than riding in foul conditions, IME. Just a wet cloth will do.
Some preparatory bike cleaning stuff is harmful, apparently.

I haven't refitted a BB since I was a kid. Admittedly I haven't kept bikes for more than 10-15km but the BBs have lasted.
If I did want to keep a bike longer how often would you recommend changing the BB?

With the cartridge types, I would normally suggest simply carring on with the same BB until the bearings showed signs of bad wear - like roughness or significant play - then replace it. As Marten mentioned/joked, that's likely to happen before the cups seize (if they ever do).
But John seems to be a having a problem with seizing for some unknown reason, so maybe it'll be a good idea for him to remove and refit at least once a year, regardless of mileage.

of a gimmick.
Apart from a wipe down before putting away if it's really wet mucky weather, my bikes tend to only get cleaned when I service them, and then only around whatever I'm working on to keep grit away from the insides. I used to ride every day in all weathers. Obviously mud pluggers will need to clean more often.
