supposed to give him my contact information. I specifically wanted
his contact information because his very pretty lugged steel frame was
custom built by a frame builder in Shenzhen and he said at the time
that although he didn't have the man's contact info on hand he would
be able to get it to give to me.

I think he's named Stephen something starting with an R is a retired
professional racer who was on the Motorola team. He participated
three times in the Tour de France and once in the Vuelta de Espagna.
The talk on site (which was not actually confirmed by talking with the
man or any of the people he was there with) was that he took a stage
win in the Vuelta. No idea which years this was. Very certain that
he was with Motorola.

He came to the race with about thirty or forty other people all of
whom were wearing matching Cycling.TV jerseys. With the exception of
sixty pink and white polka dots for Ecurie Tianya (my club) their's
were the largest concentration of matching jerseys. This year's
bikers' festival had over 600 people but mostly they came in smaller
groups of five or ten or even twenty and even if they did come in
larger groups they tended not to be in large matching groups.

I've already had a wander round cycling.tv's website and have already
sent an email that may or may not get me anywhere with them. I'm also
following a few other leads that I know though, for the most part, the
people I saw at bikers' festival who I already knew but did not
actually travel there with are Guangzhou based rather than Hong Kong
based and not in my phone (cause it isn't like I'd be in their city
and have the time to see them at anything other than a bike related
event where I'd already be seeing them).

Can anyone help?

Even a pointer to someone who knows someone would be useful. Like I
said I've got a bunch of leads to follow up on and with less than two
dozen laowai at the event it shouldn't be too hard to eventually track
him down.

This is probably more heat than light, but there's a few Steves who rode
for Motorola (previously Team 7-11) in that era.

There's a Steven Alschuler who did well in at least one Pro/1/2 race in
California, riding for Motorola in that era. I can't find anything else
about him. He's probably not it.

Steve Bauer, a good Canadian boy, did very well in that era for Moto,
but is not the most likely candidate: the biographical details don't
line up well.

A Kiwi? Steven Swart? Most famous these days for featuring in L.A.
Confidentiel!

Dahlberg. Does that ring a bell? I have contact info for him if that's

I cite my previously mentioned inability to correctly remember names
unless they have been written down, repeated many times, or are very
weird. It is entirely possible that Stephen last name starting with
an R is a different one of the foreigners I met on Sunday. This is
why I gave as much of the biographic detail that I did. I do a lot
better with remembering informational tags than I do names and it's
also easier to match that sort of thing up.

So, yes, it could be. And if it isn't but he is a retired bike racer
currently living in the Shenzhen/Hong Kong area he might know who the
specific person I'm thinking of is.

I know you said "Steven" but you must be talking about Nathan
Dahlberg. Does that ring a bell? I have contact info for him if that's
who you're talking about.

Yes, it is who I am talking about.

I was looking through the booklet given to participants (fun Chinese
practice) and noticed that it had a list of all the racers who had pre-
registered and which races they were in. Nathan Dahlberg Roger is
listed as being in the Men's Advanced Category. I'm assuming the
"Roger" is either part of someone else's name or a middle name that
has gone wandering.

Last name starting with an "R" came from hearing the announcer say
that a Mr. R-something-badly-mumbled had taken second place. (Last
year it took three tries on my name before one of my clubmates asked
me if that was me.)

As for the Stephen part of it well I cite, in part, my lack of ability
with names, the possibility that I may have met someone else named
Stephen that day, and the fact that the final phoneme in both Stephen
and Nathan is the same.
