Acutual Answer: Maxxix was formed in 1962 at a subsidiary of Mobil
Corporation that eventually merged with Exxon in the 1990s. It was
originially formed to manufacture industrial rubber goods such as
gaskets. An interest in bicycle racing by a former CEO lead to a
sideline busines in tire manufacturing that proved to be very
succcessful and the focus of the business shifted completely to tires
by 1985. Exxon/Mobil remains a majority owner of Maxxix.

Yup, that's a load of hooey. Maxxis is a recent rebranding of Cheng
Shin Tire, who decided they wanted a more west-friendly name. Lee Chi
brakes did the same thinng, rechristening themselves Promax.
