Essentially, all major brands have top end tyres in their range. But the "best" will also have to depend on your application and subjective preference.

The lightest tires that best match your particular style of riding and the terrain. Beyond those two factors, I typically let the lowest price dictate my purchase.

As the question was posed, I can only answer with the following; Select a tire that has air on the inside and tread on the outside. 😉

WHAT ARE THE Aspects of the tyre you are looking for.
Name brand.......this for some is the most important factor
Price.................Here namebrand can dictate a price,more expensive is not nescessary Better,CHEAPER IS USUALLY HEAVIER.
Size of tyre...........Width of tyre for your aplication,1.95-2.30?
Rolling resistance.....more grip,crossply,etc
Tubeless or tube..........A whole debate in itself
wire or wireless foldable..............wire braced are usually cheaper.
Colour and style.........................your choice.
tyres specs.......Downhill,singletrack,cosscountry,wet or dry conditions ,grass sand mud,rock etc

I ride a wide tyre 2.25+(Scott Couger),all teraintyre,I do mostlly crosscountry all weather,wireless which helps reduce snakebite,and i havn't switched to tubless yet.THE tyre has kevlar reinforcing so it lasts longer than other tyres,however after the third set they seem to be wearing faster and faster i suspect the suplier is using cheaper manufacturing techniches.
Before these i used Panracer crossfire tyres which were great,and had a red wall which matched my PREVIOUS bike.
My next tyre will probably be the new Maxis crosscountry.

Perhaps instead you might be going harder as your skill and fitness improves, making the tyres do more work? Just a thought. 🙂

[font=Comic Sans MS]I did consider this at first,however on the last set i hardlly even ventured onto single track and probablly did less agresive riding than the previous two sets.Chatting to two other cyclists who used the same tyers,they have also been disapointed with tyre life comparison,They have switched tyre brands. [/font]
