I need to replace my city bike which ahs been vandalised to destruction. I've been offered a hybrid with 700c 38 tyres and a 'city' bike with 26x1.6 tyres. (presumably on a 622 wheel rim).
Years ago, when I bought this bike, the received wisdom was that 622 was as large as you could get for really robust rims, and this was why mountain bikes used that size. (I chose a mountain bike without suspension, and fitted fat slicks). Certianly when I used to use my racer in the city, amongst the potholes I was having to true my 700-25c rims almost every week!!!
What is the position now? is there much difference in strength?
Also, the two bikes, ridgeback bora and ridgeback motion both use "Alex z1000 36h" rims. I take it this means that the rim is available in differnt sizes, or soes it mean it is the same rim, just with different tyres (is it possible?)
Anyone got experience of Alex z1000s? I have only used Mavic in the past.
The next bike up (in the "city" range), (the cyclone) if I can stretch to it has Alex SCE-17 36h rims - how much of a difference is there in strength?
Any other recomendations for a city bike for £200 - £250?
