6 months ago I bought new wheels with Mavic T224 rims (700C). Almost immediately, I started to hear shrieking noises when braking, and found that the rims were wearing out far too quickly. Inspecting the brake pads I found pieces of aluminum, sometimes up to 1 mm in size. I have changed the pads (Shimano XT for alu rims). Several times I have cleaned them to get rid of the alu bits. I have repolished the rims. It worked during 1 day or 1 week, then it always started again.
Anybody with a similar experience ? Were the rims possibly defective ? Have I done something very wrong ? I suspect I may have, as I didn't think of changing the brake pads right when I installed the new wheels. But can it be that bad ? Does anybody have an idea of something I could do to save these rims ?
Context info: the bike is used daily in all weather, mainly for short commuting (13 km roundtrip) in town. At this time, I probably covered ~3000 km with these new wheels.

Try new brake pads. What is happening is that bits of metal are embedding into your pads and the metal scrapes off more metal from your rims. New pads that don't get metal embedded in them should solve your problme. I like the Kool Stop Salmon pads. ---------------- Alex

1. Dump the Shimano pads. Now. They are the worst , and seem to peel the alu right off, then store it in the pad and use it to score up the rim.
2. Get Koolstop Salmon pads installed. I've used these on a dozen bikes with nary an issue.

I've installed the Kool Stop pads this week-end, and just tried them today. My first judgement is that they work great. I really jammed on the brakes and nothing bad happened. Let's see how they behave in the long run, but in the meantime it looks like I've saved a pair of rims !
