Campag cassette

I'm not familiar with Campy cassettes but a little googling leads me
to think that Campy cassetes comes in three flavours; really old equal
splined, EXA and Ultra.

It's a shame you didn't take the old cassette off first and look at
the spline pattern and then make the call. But how were you to know
Campy had changed sometime in the recent past? I'd say you are not
alone in this, the majority of sites don't seem to emphasise the
incomatibility of EXA and Ultra.

Mr. Retailer should take back the unused cassete and send you a new
one that does fit. They ought to know that there are different
flavoured splines and should have asked you if you were certain what
flavour you wanted when you made the call since you were asking if it
would fit.

I don't understand. All Campag 9-speed cassettes are interchangeable.

What make is the hub? I'm wondering if you have a non Campag hub with a non
Campag cassette.

EXA Drive and Ultra Drive is to do with the tooth profile, nothing to do
with the splines at all. They both fit on the same hubs.

Can you take a picture of one of the sprockets? Feel free to email it to me
if you can't put it on the web. Pics of the hub (without cassette) would be
good as well.

*All* Campag 9/10-speed freehubs have one asymmetrical (L-shaped) spline,
and all Campag 9 and 10-speed cassettes have the corresponding asymmetrical
spline tab.

Some other brands of cassettes, and Campag 8-speed cassettes and hubs, don't
have the asymmetrical spline.

I once had a Campag sprocket that didn't quite fit because it wasn't quite
made right -- needed a bit of filing -- but I guess you've got a more
serious incompatibility than that.

Actually there have been two variations on the Campag 9/10-speed freehub
design, but they both take all Campag 9/10-speed cassettes.

New cassette does but as the picture doesn't show all that well does
not correspond to my hub and old cassette (pictured half-cleaned).

Apart from the L-shaped tooth thing the new cassette seems to be meant
for a hub of a slightly smaller diameter.

Think I'll ask the shop and/or Dawes what I have.

Are the sprockets marked "Campagnolo"?

I'm suspecting that isn't a Camopag hub.

Applied a little elbow grease to the hub (why on earth didn't I much
earlier) to reveal Miche Team Box C0504. Their website doesn't say
much but does have contact details for a UK rep who I have emailed.

second member of the "shiny new campag cassette and nowhere to fit it"
club? :-(

Mind you, after the nice man at Bikefix this afternoon pointed out how
much play there was in it (the hub) anyway, I'm thinking "excuse to buy
new wheel"

But Shimano hubs have twelve splines. Mine has eight or nine including
the extra one. I think I need to take another happy pill at this point.

Thank you thank you. That's the first bit of information that makes
sense !

If this is correct maybe I should exercise some consumer rights and
generally stir as this state of affairs is clearly unreasonable.

I guess a good solution (though I don't have time nor should I and
have only done the course) would be to get a Campag hub and rebuild
the wheel.
