Who cares, the guy had a leak that gave him a soft tire that he
rolled. That occurs easily even when sprinting straight ahead.

Pretty darned sure that's a clincher. Do people roll clinchers?

No, I think it's way more explosive than that. Look carefully at the
bottom of his front rim, near about 5:30 in the picture. Wonder if
that happened _before_ or after his tire rolled.

Some folks actually do run clinchers in major races.

Oh, and is it not about time the UCI did something useful,
such as mandating black cycling shorts?

I had almost same problem recently, but more catastrophically and
with rear tire, its the spokes where tightened too much. Here is a
picture of my bike after wheel failure:

Well if it isn't old splitting-anodized-rim showing its ugly head!
That could not occur as a result of a flat unless the rim were made of
glass. Aluminum rims bend unless its a fatigue crack, and this looks
like the classic cracking of an anodized rim the way we had them here
    when Mavic introduced the trend..

    Dear Jobst,

I see a curved spoke at 5:30, presumably from a rim bent sideways, and
some green rim tape pulled up onto the far side of the rim, presumably
from when the clincher tire came off:

    http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/photos/races07/giro07/giro07st09-time.jpg

What do you see that shows a split in the rim?

Looks like the rim is broken in two at the 5:30 position (right in the
middle of the "A" on the sign behind the rider, the ends of the rim
overlap by a few cm) and you can see the tire and inner tube hagning off
the fork crown; I think the rim strip is still partially on the rim. My
guess is that either he hit something that caused the rim to break or it
broke in the crash (e.g., got run over by someone or jammed into a
barricade- is the "Hyperion" a carbon fiber rim?).

broken in two with the ends overlapping by 2-3 cm.

Yes to all your assumptions - they all happened. And yes, the dark anodized
rim is carbon. I'm not technical, but Brandt said it's anodized carbon.
New stuff entirely, to me. It's hard to keep up with technology. Certainly
the crash had nothing to do with the failure mode.

The rim in Campagnolo's Hyperon wheel model is carbon fiber.
